In the blazing sun and with the low light making things tricky for both sides, the Stags settled quickest and began to boss the ball. Early on, Archie showed calm hands and a bit of clever game management, while Dylan, Lucas and Byron stood firm whenever FC Blues tried to send it long. There was a nice rhythm to the passing through the back line and midfield, and when Oliver clipped a lovely ball up the left for Harry, the match sprang into life. Harry stayed on his feet superbly to keep the move alive, Clark arrived with the finish, and a minute later Clark had turned creator again, sending Harry through to slot home.
FC Blues pulled one back against the run of play, and then levelled after we did not clear our lines as cleanly as we might have liked, but the Stags kept coming. Joshua was a threat down the right, sending in a fine cross and later striking one that the keeper could not hold, with Chilton nearly pouncing. Robbo then let fly with a fierce effort that drew a save, while Chilton kept buzzing around the box and was rewarded when Clark’s clever work led to a finish tucked under the keeper. Just before the break, Harry thought he had another, and Joshua rattled one back off the post as the Stags continued to ask the questions.
After the restart, FC Blues started brightly and grabbed another one on the break, but the Stags answered with real purpose. Oliver found Harry with a perfectly weighted pass, and Harry finished with the sort of calm touch that has become a trademark. Soon after, Harry was brought down as he got in front of the last defender, and Oliver stepped up to bury the penalty. Archie then produced a strong save when FC Blues broke through, and in the same spell he was confident at corners, taking the pressure off his defence. At the other end Byron almost produced the goal of the day from halfway, and Joshua and Robbo both kept the opposition honest with their work in advanced areas.
As the match wore on, the defensive unit deserved huge credit. Dylan judged the long balls beautifully, Lucas attacked the aerial battles bravely, and Byron covered the left side with pace and tenacity. Joshua worked hard tracking back as well as driving forward, and the offside line was held together really well, which made a big difference when FC Blues tried to build pressure late on. It was a solid team effort all round, and while the scoreline looked closer than the balance of play, the Stags were more clinical when it mattered and kept pushing right to the end.
