The team at Goring hopes you're all fit and well and looking forward to getting back into our wonderful sport of Eventing.
Very sadly, we have reached the conclusion that we won't be able to run this year. One of our landlords has concerns about safety, so I'm afraid we have asked British Eventing to take Goring 2 out of the calendar in September.
When this awful virus first emerged, we lost Goring 1, just two weeks before running. Initially we felt Goring 2 would not be possible either. It would all be too complicated but, as time went on, the situation improved. We scrutinised all the BE protocols and began to feel there was a chance. As entries opened, it became clear there was a huge appetite to compete from BE members and we became increasingly excited, starting to think about preparations. We had sponsors lined up, helpers at the ready and an increasing feeling of enthusiasm and anticipation.
We spoke to our landlords. One had no problem but the other felt very uncomfortable. It was clear that the anxiety of running was going to be a real issue for him. I’m sure you can all identify with this, so we felt the best plan was to call it a day for this year. I can't tell you how disappointed we were when we actually reached that decision. We're going to miss so much, seeing all our old friends and all those familiar faces but we feel we have no choice.
The proposed dates for next year are Friday 2nd April and Saturday 3rd. For September, we are hoping for the 4th and 5th. These dates could obviously change but if you could make a note for your diary, that would be great.
We are obviously really fed up about this. Such an extraordinary time. Hopefully we'll see you next year for an exciting return to sport for Goring.

one of our first camps at Checkendon Equestrian Centre when we included a Pilates class. Pilates is fantastic exercise for riders, helping lengthen 📏, strengthen 💪, increase stability 🧘♀️ and improve flexibility 🤸♀️.

It’s a tough time for our BHS Approved Centres right now as they close their doors during the coronavirus lockdown. But we’re excited to be able to showcase one centre from the region on our page each week during our Approved Centre Focus, and this week it's the turn of Checkendon Equestrian Centre in Berkshire.
Proprietor Linda Tarrant says "Here at Checkendon we looking at the positive side of lockdown, which is that we have been able to do all those exciting chores 🧹🧽 that we would never had the time (or inclination) to do. Our grooming brushes have never looked so clean 🌟 and our school horses have never looked so happy 🐴😁 now they have been given an extra (well deserved) holiday."

🐴🏠 New home wanted 🏠🐴
Hermione is a very sweet 15.3hh, 14 year old TB mare who is sadly looking for a new home as she no longer has a rider.
Hermione is a kind natured mare who is easy to do in all ways. She will hack first, last, in a group or solo very happily. She is good in open spaces and traffic and is never strong or silly. She has previously evented and is schooled to elementary. She was diagnosed with kissing spine earlier this year. We believe she has had this for a few years and although she doesn’t seem bothered by it, we are looking for her to go to a home where she can have a quieter life working at a lower level. Hermione is a sensible but sensitive mare so for this reason she is not a novice ride. She is up to date with teeth, worming and vaccinations.
Open to sensible offers. This is a very sad sale and only 5* homes will be considered. All enquires to [email protected]

We now have over 1000 of you lovely Instagram followers and to celebrate we are finally going to tell you the name of our new boy!
Everyone meet Donny who will eventually be joining the riding school team 🐴🥳

🐴 We are on the hunt for a new 4 legged friend to join our team 🐴
We are a small friendly riding school with regular clients offering private and semi private lessons with qualified instructors.
We are looking for a 16hh+ horse that is suitable for a range of abilities that can hack and go in the school.
All of our horses are given the highest standard of care and their work load and lifestyle is tailored to the horses individual needs.
We are open to buying, loaning or a working livery.
Please email [email protected] if you think you have something suitable

Colby is looking for a new rider ideally on loan to stay at his current yard - Checkendon Equestrian Centre in South Oxfordshire.
Wimborne Warpaint Colby is a very much loved 13h pony and after a period of lameness he is back to full fitness and ready for a new rider to love him.
Forward going and responsive off the leg but with good brakes, Colby loves hacking and does a lovely dressage test. He will suit a flat work and hacking home.
Very good to travel, he has done PC rallies, junior camp, in-hand showing and unaffiliated dressage competitions and been fantastic throughout.
A gorgeous personality, he loves to be brushed and pampered and gets along with all our other horses. Happy to hack first or last or in the middle, as well as alone. He doesn’t spook or rear, no bad habits when ridden. However, he can be a little strong when being led in hand so not suitable to be led by very small children.
Ideally suited to a gentle quiet rider - child or small teen/adult.
No loan fee but rider to cover his livery costs. please email [email protected]

Team checkendon just gained a new member and we need your help naming him!
His passport name is ‘Power Line’ 😅 leave your suggestions in the comments below.

Tribute to Linda Tarrant
Dear Friends of Checkendon,
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share the loss of Linda Tarrant.
Linda has been the driving force behind CEC for the last 30 years growing Checkendon into a well known British Horse Society approved riding school, assessment and training centre, competition venue and livery yard that it is today.
Along the way Linda has overseen the transformation of CEC and dedicated herself to the wider equestrian industry most notably with her work for the BHS. Linda was a highly valued member of the Berkshire committee and worked as a Riding and Road Safety volunteer and more latterly as an Equestrian Safety and Welfare Advisor.
Linda has successfully trained many staff members and clients towards their BHS exams. Many of those staff are still with us today and share the same enthusiasm and commitment to horses as Linda herself – they are a credit to her legacy.
In recognition of her dedication to the BHS and all things equestrian, a special annual award has been created, to be known as the Linda Tarrant Award for Services to Equestrianism and Volunteering, and will be presented at the annual volunteer awards open to any person in the BHS South Region.
As well as her hard work and dedication to the equine industry, Linda will be remembered for her strength, determination, loyalty, kindness and her no nonsense approach.
Although a big piece of the yard is missing, we will all be working as hard as ever to continue to serve our fantastic customers in honour to her legacy, with Emily Hancock as manager.
Linda’s funeral will take place on Monday 20th June 2022 at 11.30am, Reading Crematorium, All Hallows Road, Reading, RG4 5LP, followed by a wake at the Highwayman in Checkendon.
Linda kindly requested no flowers, but a donation to Sue Ryder who were so caring and supportive to her and Paul, would be much appreciated.
