We use a wide variety of activities to create unforgettable outdoor adventures that promote resilience and self-confidence.

Established in 1964, we have been a charity since 2019. Longtown Outdoor Learning Centre has been operating since 1964. The centre offers accommodation, camping and challenging outdoor adventure activities for all ages and abilities in and around the Brecon Beacons National Park. Our multi-activity outdoor education courses aim to promote self-confidence, consideration for others, and caring for the environment. This comes from enjoying the successes achieved through personal endeavour and working together, in wild and beautiful landscapes.

It has been wonderful to see work on our new kitchen and dining room getting underway!

The first step was taking down the old kit stores, which will make way for the new building.

We were all completely transfixed watching the big machines at work, carefully taking down each section. It’s really exciting to see plans that have been in development for a number of years starting to become a reality!

We are delighted to welcome our two new Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor apprentices, Storm and Aiden!

Over the coming months, they’ll be working alongside our experienced instructors while training with Training to develop the skills and knowledge they need for a career in outdoor learning and adventure.

Their apprenticeship will cover everything from planning and delivering outdoor activities, managing groups and keeping participants safe, to adapting sessions for different needs and environments. They’ll also develop their own practical skills across a range of outdoor activities and learn how to create positive, inclusive experiences for the young people we work with.

Most importantly, they’ll be gaining plenty of hands-on experience here at Longtown, supporting our schools and groups and learning from our experienced team.

We’re really looking forward to watching Storm and Aiden develop their skills and confidence and become part of the Longtown team!

Huge congratulations to Joe!

Joe is currently completing his Level 5 Outdoor Learning Specialist apprenticeship with us through and has just passed his caving assessment with flying colours!

This means he is now qualified to lead groups into our local caves, adding another exciting skill to his growing outdoor instructor toolkit. Caving requires a high level of technical knowledge, safety awareness and group management, so this is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to all the hard work Joe has put into his training.

We’re really proud of Joe, and we love seeing him share his passion for adventure with the young people who visit Longtown.

A big thank you also to the intrepid explorers who volunteered to be part of his assessment group — particularly Ben, who chose to spend his birthday squeezing through long, dark cave tunnels! We’re not sure that’s how everyone would choose to celebrate, but what a way to spend a birthday!

A little bit of history at Longtown…

Longtown Outdoor Learning has been delivering outdoor learning and adventures for over 60 years, but the beautiful building at the heart of our centre has been part of the local community for much, much longer.

Built as an Inn, around 1645, the building has served the community for over 380 years. Today, it is Grade II listed, reflecting both its historical importance and the need to carefully preserve this special building for future generations.

This summer, a large section of our boundary wall, which was sadly close to toppling, has been expertly rebuilt by Dai Davis and his two sons.

They have done a fantastic job, restoring the wall and ensuring it should now stand strong for many years to come.

A huge thank you to Dai, Hamer and Lloyd for helping us look after this important part of our history!

We are very excited to announce that construction of our new 80-seater dining room and commercial kitchen is about to get underway! This has taken many years of planning and preparation, and we are thrilled that the project can now become a reality.

This development will replace the building that currently operates as our kit stores and will significantly enhance our facilities and the experience we are able to offer our guests. One of the biggest improvements will be our ability to accommodate larger groups together in one space, something that has often been difficult with our current dining arrangements. The new facilities will also provide a more spacious, comfortable and efficient environment for everyone who visits us.

The new building has been designed and will be built by . TG Escapes specialise in bespoke, sustainable, timber-framed modular buildings that are designed to emphasise connection with nature and operate to net zero.

Watch this space for updates!

As our school groups head off for the summer holidays, we're delighted to be welcoming a variety of charities and support organisations to our centre over the next six weeks.

This Thursday, we're excited to welcome Our Second Home for a youth residential. They support young refugees and asylum seekers by creating opportunities to build friendships, develop leadership skills and simply enjoy being young in a safe and welcoming environment.

At the end of July, we'll be hosting the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, whose work inspires young people to believe in a brighter future while living through and beyond cancer.

In early August, we'll welcome Support 4 Independence, an award-winning care provider offering accessible, inclusive support for people with a wide range of needs.

We're incredibly proud to host these inspiring organisations. During their stay, many of these groups will be out and about in our local area, and we know our community will extend its usual warm welcome.

We believe that spending time with people from different backgrounds, abilities and life experiences enriches us all, and we're looking forward to sharing our corner of the countryside with them.

Please join us in wishing all of our summer guests a wonderful stay!
