I am sharing this article below by Dr Stacy Sims (a leading expert on menopause and fitness/strength/longevity) it's a short but excellent read...

I did my menopause training with Dr Sims and she really is a specialist on the topic!

"Women who avoid heavy weights may be leaving one of the most powerful longevity tools on the table, according to Dr. Stacy Sims.

As estrogen levels decline with age, the body becomes more vulnerable to losses in bone density, muscle mass, and fast-twitch muscle fibers that support strength, power, and independence.

Sims argues that progressive overload (progressively heavier weights) is essential for preserving myosin/ muscle function and maintaining the type of muscle tissue most associated with healthy aging and physical resilience.

While lighter weights and high-rep training can improve muscular endurance, they don't provide the same stimulus for bone growth and maximal strength that heavy lifting delivers.

The benefits extend beyond the gym, with muscle-building exercise supporting metabolic health, increasing neuroprotective compounds like BDNF, which is key to safeguarding cognitive function, memory, mood and appetite later in life.

Although activities such as yoga and Pilates improve mobility, flexibility, and balance, Sims views them as complements—not replacements—for challenging strength work.

Her approach combines efficient 30-minute compound lifting sessions with smart nutrition, adequate protein, and evidence-based supplements such as creatine to support long-term health and performance"

Sometimes it's not about the weight, sometimes it's about overcoming fear and doubt... my client this morning has transformed from being scared to try, to adopting an 'ok let's do it' approach!!
Literally scared of the Smith machine and doing a bench press... today, we added weights to the bar!!! 💪🥂
And I love this!!!
This is strength in another form... and a form that will be a foundation for all kinds of things!! A super-power!
Well done... you should be so proud of yourself!! 💪

Another PB tonight and another 52.5kg (inc the trap bar)... this isn't about lifting heavy for the sake of it, this is about building strength... for now and for the years to come!
This is about functional strength!
This is about independent living.
This is about ageing strong!!
These lifts have purpose!

And they build confidence and self-belief... there's nothing more powerful!!

To all my clients... you are the absolute best!!
💪🥂💪
