Knowing when not to swim is just as important as knowing how to swim ππ©΅
Weβre seeing a few social media posts highlighting the dangers of sea swimming. For those of us who swim regularly, this can feel frightening, yet deep down, we usually know when the sea is safe and when itβs not. These are gentle reminders for both experienced and beginner sea swimmers.
Before entering the water, take a few minutes to really read the conditions.
Things to look for on the beach:
β’ Large, powerful waves breaking far out
β’ Waves closing out across the whole beach with no calm channels
β’ Strong white water surging up the shore
β’ Sand being dragged back quickly under your feet (strong backwash)
β’ Wind whipping spray off the wave tops
Things to look for in a bay:
β’ Choppy, confused water with no obvious calm areas
β’ Waves wrapping around headlands and rebounding off rocks
β’ Strong surface movement pulling away from the shore (often offshore winds)
β’ Foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily in one direction
If the sea looks angry, chaotic, or unpredictable, it probably is. No swim is worth the risk. Thereβs always another day, and choosing to stay out is a sign of experience not weakness.
Respect the sea, trust your instincts, and look out for each other π
After some feedback at the lessons today, I've been asked to do a safety session for our adults so they can also know what to do heaven forbid anything happens. So potentially I can put this on on a Wednesday evening at 8pm (the pool is quieter) or Saturday afternoons at 130pm. Please let me know if this is something you would like to attend!

In light of this recent and very upsetting incident very close to home our first sessions back this week will all be water safety based please get the kiddos to bring in tops and bottoms over their swimming outfits we will be practicing how to help if anything happens and how to be safe! This is something we do cover often but this week seems a fitting week! Our thoughts and prayers here go out to all the families involved and to all the brave souls involved in bringing them home!
After resuming shoreline searches in Withernsea for one missing person today, 3 January, HM Coastguard stood down its extensive search effort this afternoon. Please refer to police for further updates.
