Leic legend

In an era dominated by stars like Herol Graham, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, and Michael Watson, Chris Pyatt often fought for recognition. The Leicester native first made his mark by winning the ABA welterweight title in 1982, carrying strong domestic credentials into the professional ranks. Yet for much of his early career, he appeared just short of world-class level.

Tough, aggressive, and durable, Pyatt was a real force at light-middleweight. In 1987, he pushed Italy’s future world champion Gianfranco Rosi the distance in Rosi’s hometown but lost on points. Pyatt rebounded impressively, stringing together 11 straight victories—10 by stoppage—to earn a shot at the brilliant John David Jackson. However, Jackson’s skill and precision exposed Pyatt’s rough-and-ready style, leading to a wide points loss in Leicester.

Pyatt refused to fade away. After collecting international titles against solid opposition, he earned a crack at seasoned Italian Sumbu Kalambay in 1993—a former world champion who had twice outpointed Herol Graham. Many expected Pyatt to fall short again, but he produced the performance of his career, edging a razor-close decision at Leicester’s Granby Halls. Kalambay retired after the bout.

Pyatt went on to make two successful title defences before running into Steve Collins in 1994. The Irishman’s class told, as he halted Pyatt in five one-sided rounds. Pyatt boxed on until 1997, winning the Commonwealth title from Kevin Kelly and closing his career on a high with a victory over Maurice Forbes in Manchester.
