EAST GOSCOTE LADIES DEVELOPMENT
Match Report – 19th August 2026
After what seems a lifetime, the ladies development team had their first ever match, a friendly against Cosby United.
The first surprise for this team was when they found out they were playing an under 18’s team which resulted in a few ladies having a quick pitstop to the toilet, this was more to do with the average age of the team being above 40 than shock.
The message for the match was just go out and enjoy the game, if you do that then you are winners regardless of the score.
The ladies started defensively strong, rather than parking the bus, they parked the train leaving very little space for Cosby to get in and around the box. Cosby were attacking well, however, the defensive unit held firm. Then came the moment when Paayal was clean through from a great through ball, unfortunately Paayal must have thought the full time whistle had gone as she was standing in an offside position, nearly at her car.
A great well rehearsed defensive move came when Cosby crossed the ball where three players went to kick the ball, fortunately the third player did get a good foot on and cleared the lines. The ladies are now signed up for Britain’s Got Talent after bring spotted by a talent scout with their version of the can can.
The first half was all Cosby who were throwing everything at East Goscote, however, with the work rate of Katy in centre midfield and our very own rock, Lizzie, they were struggling to put any telling balls through.
When they did get through Clo, in goal was ready, willing and waiting. She was even more impressive when she showed her deep knowledge of angles and defensive positions when she cleverly let a ball go over her head, to rebound off a defenders legs where Clo gathered the ball without moving – genius goalkeeping.
Before the game Janki, ensured she let the manager know her reason if she needed to come off early, 15 minutes in she duly obliged, by flagging she needed to come off. On stepped Gemma who hasn’t played for quite some time, in a position she has never played before. But you would not have thought it as she rolled back the years to help Emily behind her s***f out the Cosby left flank.
Lizzie then decided to try her infamous backheel which fooled everyone, including herself, doing well not to face plant
Half time came. 0-0. Fantastic first half performance, keep going ladies.
Subs were made at half time, Chloe coming on for Clo in goal (yes it really is confusing, but easy to keep calling the same name). Beth came on up front for Sharon who had put a real shift in, working tirelessly up front.
Immediately, Beth was making an impact with her powerful play and with a little more confidence could have scored, however, chose to cross and narrowly played it just behind.
The second half continued in the same vain as the first with Cosby, who were now kicking downhill, attacking. Isla on the left was having a great battle with their right winger, the look of determination on her face when closing their player down was, quite frankly, scary. Even the spectators took a step back.
Rachel at the back was covering when needed, then pressing high running like a greyhound chasing a hare.
Zoe alongside Rachel was calm and composed making some great tackles and interceptions.
Evie was showing what a talent she is running up and down the line covering defensively and when she got the ball driving at the Cosby defence. She got through on goal, however, I think her previous exertions caught up with her as she shot straight to the keeper.
Chloe in goal made a full length diving save to keep Cosby out, definitely one for the cameras (what’s that, no one brought a camera?)
Then with two minutes remaining ……………… East Goscote scored their first ever goal. A great cross in and the ball calmly slotted home. Erling Haaland eat your heart out. The players went wild. Due to the inexperience of some players they started to celebrate, only to be told it was an own goal. East Goscote had indeed scored, however, it was in their own net.
The final whistle went and Cosby had won 1-0.
However, as the cliché goes, the real winner was the game of football. Throughout the whole game there was plenty of laughter from both teams with some good football played. Now just to put some context into this, a few East Goscote ladies had never played a match before, some hadn’t played for a number of years, so to put in a performance like that says they won.
The manager was extremely proud of every player who represented the team.
Well done ladies, this is the start of something very special, however, please keep the expletive sign language towards your manager to yourselves. Otherwise it is a lot of burpees and running at the next training session!
