Neil’s back with part 2 of our Core Engagement mini-series, this time with a brief introduction to the multifidus, which is a key player in core engagement.
The multifidus can be divided into two main layers:
Superficial Multifidus:
The criss-crossing muscles you’ll often see in anatomy diagrams, spanning between the spinous processes. They help stabilise the spine while also contributing to spinal extension.
Deep Multifidus:
Situated closer to the spinal column, beneath the superficial layer. Its primary role is to provide stability to the spine at a deeper, more local level.
