We had a great evening with Mestre Gilmar – a renowned Brazilian percussionist, musical director, and cultural leader of Nação Maracatu Estrela Brilhante de Igarassu – who ran a workshop with Baque de Axé this week. Thank you to out UK Maracatu familia who came (from far and wide) this and made it a wonderful evening.

💃💚 Announcing our next dance course – June 2026 💚💃

The course will teach dance choreography for Maracatu, with a focus on steps for the Orixa Oxossi and techniques for dancing whilst parading, in preparation for Notting Hill Carnival 2026.

Beginners and experienced dancers welcome. You do not need to join us for our NHCarnival parade to attend this course.

Brazilian Maracatu Dance Classes — Baque de Axé Fun-filled and friendly Brazilian Maracatu and Orisha dance classes open to beginner, intermediate and experienced dancers in London.

🎶 We’re beyond excited to welcome guest teacher Mestre Gilmar from Maracatu Estrela Brilhante de Igarassu (Pernambuco, Brazil) – one of the most powerful and traditional maracatu nations in the world!! 🇧🇷✨

Mestre Gilmar is a master percussionist, culture bearer, and teacher who lives and breathes the rhythms of maracatu and coco. Expect deep grooves, rich history, and serious energy straight from the source.

Whether you’re new to the rhythms or already experienced, this is a rare chance to learn and connect with the roots of the music we love ❤️
