How Long Does It Take a Child to Learn to Swim?

“How long until my child can actually swim?’ It’s the question we get asked more than any other - so we gave it an honest answer on the blog.

Short version: there isn’t a fixed timeline, and if a swim school gives you a confident number, it’s worth asking where it came from. Even Swim England - the framework every one of our lessons follows, won’t put a timeframe on it, because it depends entirely on the child. What we can tell you: consistency (weekly beats fortnightly, every time) and small classes are what actually move the needle. Ours are capped at 5 children, which is why progress tends to be steady rather than occasional.”

We absolutely loved receiving this wonderful feedback from Eden’s family, who joined us from Hong Kong during their summer stay in London.

With the support of his instructor Jose, Eden made fantastic progress - from initially feeling uncomfortable with water on his face to confidently submerging himself and swimming a short distance. What a transformation! 👏

Our women-only swimming sessions run every Tuesday, 6:45–7:30pm at Stepney All Saints — a calm, private space to learn or build confidence in the water, taught by a female instructor.

We’re opening dedicated, Girls only lessons at 6:00pm every Wednesday
All abilities are welcome, and places are limited.

Water safety isn't just a summer topic. Learning to float, recover, and get in and out of the water safely are skills that matter all year — in a pool, at a lido, or anywhere your child might unexpectedly find themselves in water.
It's one of the reasons we keep classes small: so every child gets the attention needed to build these skills properly, not just learn a stroke.

Trial Week starts today. For one week only, new children can join us for a £1 trial place with a complimentary assessment — the easiest way to see how we teach before committing.
Your child will be placed according to their ability, age, confidence and developmental stage, so you'll get a genuine feel for the class that's right for them.
Spaces are limited, for children only, first come first served, and Trial Week can't be used alongside any other offer. Running until Sunday 20th September, or until spaces are filled.

How do we decide which class is right for your child? We follow the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme, which looks at more than swimming ability alone.
Alongside what a child can do in the water, we consider their age, confidence, and physical and emotional development.
That's why, for example, a 3 or 4-year-old wouldn't normally swim alongside 7 or 8-year-olds, even if they can perform similar skills - the class needs to suit the whole child, not just the stroke.
