Cardigan Sub Aqua Club is on the last day of a week long dive trip to Croatia, on the island of Vis. Our diving has been provided courtesy of Manta Diving by Andi Marovic. We are a fairly large group of 14 divers, but everything has been calmly and professionally organised.

Each day we have been taken to interesting dive sites from wrecks to caves and reefs, there has been something for everyone. The recreational diving limit on air in Croatia is 40m, after which you are mixed gases. We were a group with some on air and some on nitrox, some with 12L tanks but most on 15L tanks.

The boats have been spacious enough even for a large group, with storage for kit and tanks. Some days we stayed out for the second dive, with a brief shore interval at a small beach cafe, other days we came back to the centre and had a longer shore break at Komiza.

The visibility has been great and although some were diving in dry suits the majority were in about 7mm wetsuits and coped fine. The occasional chilly thermal in the water was definitely noticeable.

Shoreside the dive centre has plenty of space to hang wetsuits to air dry for the next day and we really appreciated the upstairs seating and coffee facilities. The centre is a short flat walk to the town of Komiza (about 10mins) where our accommodation was, with restaurants, cafes and bars surrounding the harbour.

Everyone has enjoyed the week of diving and we have too many photos to share them all, but here is a taster.

Suffice to say we would come again and a big thank you to Andi and his team for a great weeks diving.

Yesterday the club trip to Croatia dived Monk Seal Cave.

We entered and then down to about 19m looking following the reef wall. Then entered the cave. The cave starts of big with sunlight streaming in, then you go through a narrow swim through before the cave gets very dark and heads in shore to depths of almost less than 1m. You can surface, which was where the seals would sunbathe and breed, but we turned round and headed back.

The cave has a 27m tall entrance shore side and oak the longest semi-submerged sea cave on the eastern side of the Adriatic Sea (160 m). It used to be a home to the only Mediterranean seal, the Mediterranean monk seal. Monk seals no longer visit the cave, the small beach at the end of the cave was once used by the seals to raise their young. The rocks are covered by numerous bryozoans, sponges and polychetes of various colours and strange forms and textures. There were some protected species known as the purple sea star and the cowry, as well as golden coral shrimps. We saw loads of black urchin, scorpion fish and an octopus hiding in a crevice.

Today was a brilliant day of diving in Croatia with Manta Diving Centre for our club trip.

We started with a deep dive down to circa 40m to see the B24, a bomber that crashed in 1944. Here is a wonderful video of club members diving over the wreck. Credit to Barry Tattersall

Day 3 - Croatia Club Trip

The morning dive was the wreck of the Fortunel fishing trawler that lies in a depth of 35-51m. It sunk on 10 April 1997 when it struck the coast
due to a navigational error and sunk in just a few minutes. Now it lies upright on the north side of Vis. It is still filled with fishing gear and crew belongings so it offered a window into the daily life of fisherman, as well as a look at massive Scorpion fish that littered the wreck.

The second dive of the day took us further round the coast for some scenic diving going down to about 40m, showing two caves and loads of beautiful marine life.

Thanks to Manta Diving Centre for another great day of diving.

Day 2 - Dive 4 Croatia

After a surface interval back at the dive centre and in the town, we heded back onto the boat for 1pm and our second dive of the day, which was to the Outer Pinnacle, which was a few minutes boat ride out.

You descend the pinnacle quite quickly finding about 25m, but with the option of going much deeper to see the Gregorian fan coral. The pinnacle was made a nature reserve a few years ago and as a result life was abundant.

We went clockwise round the pinnacle with divers picking their own routes. We were treated to a fly past by some barracuda.

All in all a very scenic and relaxed second dive of the day.

Day 2 - Dive 3 Croatia

After a few drinks and dinner in the bars last night we all met at 9am to head off for our first dive of the day. Nice to have some of our non-diving companions along for the boat trip - Sue, Charlie and Sharon.

The dive was the Vassilios T Wreck which is a 104-meter-long Greek cargo steamship lying at depths of 22 to 55 meters.

It was built in 1920 in Osaka, Japan, originally named Eastern Temple. On March 19, 1939, after a rudder failure caused it to strike the coast during a storm it sunk. It was carrying coal from Swansea to Venice. It now rests on its port (left) side on a sandy seabed; the bow sits around 22 meters deep, while the stern and propeller reach down to 45–55 meters

It is home to large scorpionfish, conger eels, moray eels, octopuses, and colorful sponges. Needless to say we didn’t see everything on that list.

Divers dived according to certs so some went all the way to the bottom and did deco, whilst others remained around the 30m mark.

The wreck itself is quite a spectacular sight. We were warned there is a strict no pe*******on rule, as it contains oil leaked inside and this could escape if divers enter and that would ruin not only the environment but the diving locally.

🤿Day 1 - Dive 1 Club trip to Vis, Croatia

We met at the dive centre first thing, got our kit loaded onto the boat and headed off on a short trip for our first dive.

The wreck of the Teti which is a 72-meter-long Italian cargo steamship sitting on a sloping sandy and rocky bottom off the islet of Mali Barjak.

The Italian steel cargo steamship was built in 1883 in the USA and sank on May 23, 1930. It now sits in
8 to 38 meters.

The best-preserved and most picturesque part of the wreck is the stern, featuring a distinct spare steering wheel and intact steering gear. The cargo hold is still filled with the original cargo of granite/cobblestones used for post-WWI road building. An exposed steam boiler, engine remnants, and structural pulleys are all on display covered in encrusting sponges and bryozoans.

Members reported seeing moray eels, stone fish and several other small shoals of fish. Biggest excitement for some was the purple nudibranch and the big steering wheel that was clearly visible at the starboard end.

A very successful pool evening last night.

We had three try divers who were very attentive, polite and really seemed to enjoy the experience.

There were 12 in the pool with members practicing and training. Poolside support was provided by Will, Dave, Chris & Rod.

No pool next week then after that we are back to every Tuesday.. We have quite a few try dives to deliver.
