🇪🇬 RED SEA // THISTLEGORM ⚓🤿

Jason’s turn in the spotlight — and this one was a big first.

His first wreck pe*******on, and what a wreck to do it on: the SS Thistlegorm.

The scale of the ship completely blew him away, but getting inside and seeing the trucks, motorbikes and cargo still sitting in the holds was the real standout moment.

His verdict?

EPIC.

Another proper bucket-list dive ticked off on this trip 🌊

🇪🇬 RED SEA // NIGHT DIVE 🌙🤿

“Night dives are awesome!”

Lia pretty much summed this one up perfectly.

We had an incredible night dive on The Alternatives — a beautiful pinnacle reef that completely came alive after dark.

Morays and trevallies hunting together, loads of activity on the reef, and one of those dives that just keeps getting better the longer you’re in the water.

Safe to say this is one Lia won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

Another unreal Red Sea moment in the books 🌊

🇪🇬 RED SEA // DAY 2 🌊

Four dives today. Wrecks, reefs, and a seriously difficult question for Cathan…

What was the favourite?

After plenty of thinking, Shark & Yolanda Reef took the win — mainly thanks to that huge wall dropping away beneath us. 🤿

Exactly the kind of dive that reminds you just how big the underwater world really is.

Day 2 complete. Five more to go.

🇪🇬 RED SEA // DAY 1 🌊

First day of diving complete and Chris is kicking off our diver diary.

His favourite dive? The very first one.

After all the diving we do together back home, nothing quite prepares you for dropping onto a Red Sea reef for the first time. 🪸🐠

And we’ve only just started…

🌊 THIS WEEK IN DIVING | 23rd–27th SEPTEMBER 🤿

It’s a slightly different week at Oceanauts… because by the weekend we’re swapping the Irish Sea for the Red Sea! 🇪🇬🌊

But we’ve still got a few things happening before we disappear!

🔦 WEDNESDAY | NIGHT DIVE MASTERCLASS
We’re back at Markethill Scuba for an evening night dive with a focus on dive torches.

We’ll look at different styles of torch, beam patterns, primary vs backup lights and what works best in limited visibility — then we’ll get in the water and put them to the test.

A great chance to try some different options and get more comfortable diving after dark.

🔧 THURSDAY | WORKSHOP DAY
Final servicing, kit checks and preparations for Egypt. We’ll be making sure everything is ready before it gets packed for a week at sea.

🏊 FRIDAY | NO POOL SESSION
No Newry pool session this week as we finish packing and get ready to travel.

✈️ SATURDAY | RED SEA BOUND! 🇪🇬

This is the big one.

We’re heading to Egypt for a week-long Red Sea liveaboard aboard Emperor Superior — a full week of diving, eating, sleeping and repeating!

This is something we’ve been looking forward to for a long time, and we can’t wait to bring you all along for the ride.

We’ll be posting daily updates from the Red Sea, sharing the dives, wrecks, marine life and everything else we get up to aboard Emperor Superior.

We return on Sunday 4th October, with Oceanauts reopening on Wednesday 7th October once we’ve unpacked, reset and recovered from a serious case of post-liveaboard blues.

Last winter, a small group of divers set themselves a goal.

They wanted to move beyond recreational diving, develop real technical skills, and prepare for the deeper wrecks around our coast.

While much of the diving season slowed down, we kept training.

We worked through twinset control, buoyancy, propulsion, teamwork, gas switching and decompression procedures. Every session built on the last, and every dive brought the goal closer.

That journey culminated in two unforgettable days at Malin Head, diving the SS Laurentic.

It was more than another wreck dive. It was the moment a winter of commitment came together, a milestone those divers had genuinely earned.

This November, we begin again.

The Oceanauts Winter XR Track starts with SSI XR Foundations Twinset at Markethill Scuba on 7–8 November 2026.

You don't need previous twinset experience to begin.

From there, suitable divers can progress through XR Nitrox and Extended Range over the winter.

⚙️ Complete three-course track: £2,195
👥 Maximum four divers

Twinset hire, air fills, Markethill entry and SSI registration are included with Foundations.

Divers who still need Deep Diving or Enriched Air Nitrox 40 can prepare on 17–18 October.

🌊 THIS WEEK IN DIVING | 16th–20th SEPTEMBER 🌊

This Week in Diving is up, everyone! We've got another busy few days ahead with training, servicing, and a Specialty Weekend to finish things off. 🤿

⚙️ WEDNESDAY | BCDs & Buoyancy Control Masterclass — 6:30pm

We'll be looking at different BCD styles, getting your setup right, and how it all translates into better buoyancy control underwater.

If you'd like to join us, please book ASAP so we can confirm the session is going ahead.

🗓️ I'll also be around for our Office Day on Wednesday if you need to drop off or collect serviced kit, or want to chat about equipment, training, or upcoming trips.

Specialty Weekend: Day 2. We're timing this one to enter around sunset and transition into an awesome night dive at Greencastle. Already a qualified night diver? You're very welcome to join us for the fun dive! ⭐

📌 A quick note on bookings: We've had a few last-minute cancellations recently, and many of these activities need minimum numbers to run. Going forward, all new bookings will be paid in advance so we can plan confidently and keep as much diving on the calendar as possible.

♦️ Within 24 hours or for a no-show, we'll refund 50%.
♦️ If we can fill your space and avoid the cost, we'll refund you in full.

👏 A massive shoutout to Connor and Pierce for successfully completing the SSI Dry Suit Specialty Course this past weekend! It was inspiring to see them take on the challenge and excel at dry suit diving. With these new skills, they’re now ready to explore underwater wonders all year long, right here on our stunning Northern Irish coast. ❄️🌊
