Hello all, hope you are well.
So thought this would give you a laugh…… as you know I own Arty who has now turned 4 and I also look after a 32 yr old pony as a companion for Arty.
Their teeth were due for a check so I asked an Equine Dentist I have come to know if she would mind seeing them, she was delighted as saw it as CPD as can get instant feedback from the animals (how amazing is that).
Arty has had a lot of dental work done in the time I have owned him including the removal of 3 teeth (don’t ask) and wanted the dental done without sedation. He didn’t like how the sedation made him feel. As this was just a check-up, we didn’t see that being a problem as long as he behaved.
So, we took it slowly, he set the pace, we stopped when he asked, started when he asked & he gave us a running commentary. At one stage when his top back teeth were being rasped, he asked us to stop as it felt like his skull was vibrating so she stopped and we gave him a break before continuing. He asked what he should do with his tongue as he felt it was going to get stuck in his throat making him panic so she suggested as he had a triangular shaped tongue, he should push it forward, which he did much to her amusement. When she was doing his edges, she asked him to move his tongue to the other side of mouth so it was safely out of the way which he did. After a while we carried on and he was done, all good, no drama.
We moved on to the pony who was a completely different kettle of fish. She gave me what I can only describe as an electric shock down the rope and told me to ‘back off’ and stand in the corner. She said I could hold the rope but she didn’t want me trying to hold her for the dentist. That continued for the whole appointment. When I asked her if she wanted a break it was…. No just get on with it!
She was done in about ½ the time Arty was done and her teeth were actually much worse but she is done yearly as oppose to Artys 4 monthly sessions.
Later that evening I got a text from the dentist asking me to apologise to Arty, apparently, she was checking her equipment like normal at the end of the day and found a bearing has gone in the rasp which means Arty may have felt more vibration than usual 😊 Artys response ‘told you’…
It is amazing how people coming into the industry are open to new ideas and happy to work together, happy horses mean happy people 😊
Hope you enjoyed reading this.
Please if you read this remember to like, comment, share etc, its lovely to open peoples minds to what we can all do to help be better owner / riders / keepers etc. Plus feel free to ask any questions.
If the dentist is happy for me to tag her in I will as I will certainly be using her again 😊
