Many autistic children walk on tiptoes. This can be due to sensory seeking or avoidance, emotional regulation or lack of body awareness. Toe walking can lead to poor balance, reduced ankle movement, tight muscles/tendons and foot pain. Yoga therapy can be a helpful support by incorporating balance games, proprioceptive input, strengthening exercises and sensory regulation activities. 🦶 🧘♀️

Balloon yoga 🎈The concentration, focus and stomach muscles required for this fun exercise are incredible. Mostly because you don’t realise you’re doing any of these things. You’re just having fun 🤩

Creating a safe space is the most important thing in any kind of therapy (in my opinion)! Last year this young man couldn’t be still long enough to even touch the ‘spikey’ mat. Now he lays on it for over 10 minutes. How does this magic work? REGULATION 💖 First you own, then joint, then self.

EXPECTATION VERSUS REALITY: when we expect people, ‘things’ and life to be a certain way, we leave ourselves open to disappointment and suffering. If we can remove the ‘shoulds’ that our mind creates eg “life should be fair” then we can free ourselves from disappointment and suffering. I never really expected the Amazon wig to be just like the picture 😂 😜
