Both our senior teams are in action this weekend at home.

The 1st XV welcome Builth Wells who make the long journey to Fairwood Road in this Smiths Homes Cup fixture, It's the first round of the Cup so no doubt both sides will be seeking to make strong statements and progress.

The SURFs welcome Waunarlwydd to Upper Killay in their fourth league fixture of the season,

Team selections are shown. Both games kick off at 2.30pm. The boys would appreciate a strong home support.

Sunday is junior rugby day where the boys & girls have the following fixtures:-

U8s - Home v Waunarlwydd 9.00am Kick Off

U10s - Home v Mumbles 10.00 am Kick Off.

U11s - Home v Birchgrove 10.30am Kick Off.

U16s - Home v Bridgend Sports 12 noon Kick Off.

It is with deepest regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Robin Kirby.

Robin has been a member of Swansea Uplands RFC for decades. A former player and Captain for the 1969/1970 season & lifelong supporter. Robin was also Chairman from 1982 to 1986, he was also a trustee & one of the project team who oversaw the development of our fantastic facility. Robin, up until last season could be seen watching the senior sides on the bottom touchline and was known to give well informed opinions later in the bar after the final whistle.

Our thoughts are with Robin's family at this difficult time. A proud legal advocate & a true gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him.

Once the funeral arrangements are known we will circulate.

The senior squads delivered two wins last Saturday.

1st XV

With the pitch in first class condition those who made the effort to come and support were certainly treated to a great game of rugby. The score on the final whistle was 64-26.

Try scorers were Rhodri Wall & James Davies with two apiece, with Harri Jones, Rhys Williams, Alex Margetts, Alex Wadling, Tom Edmunds & Peter Anson bagging a try each. Pete also added five conversions with James Davies adding two.

For the first time in club history two men were deservedly awarded the Man of the Match & they were ho**er Harri Jones & second row Ioan Verhoevan. They are pictured being presented with a bottle of fizz each by forwards coach Dylan Richards.

Jack Jenkins was presented with his club tie for his senior debut at the start of the season by Club Secretary Martin Bevan Jones.

SURFs

The boys made the long trip to Abercrave where the final score was 7-46 in favour of the Uplands.

Tries came through Joe Slee & Shinji Harris with a brace each, with Justin Sperrin, Sam Grounds, Iestyn Jones & Sam Grounds bagging a try each. Sion Edmunds also kicked two conversions & James Edmunds added another.

Next week both senior sides are at home with the 1st XV welcoming Builth Wells who they play in the first round of the Cup whilst the SURFs face Waunarlwydd in the league.

Both our senior teams are in action this weekend and we also say a big thank you to our Mums, Girlfriends, Wives, Sisters and Lady Supporters for all their support during the season with a MWGS lunch. They will be treated to food prepared by our Chairman and lots of w**e and bubbles.

The 1st XV welcome table toppers Tenby to Fairwood Towers in what promises to be a close encounter. Last season saw the teams winning their respective home games. Let’s get a big crowd to cheer the boys on. Kick off is at 2.30pm

The SURFs meanwhile are on the road to Abercrave who will provide a tough challenge for the boys. Again the squad would appreciate as much support as possible. Again it’s a 2.30pm kick off.

Senior team news will be posted later.

The senior squads certainly delivered in respect of results last Saturday.

1st XV

Travelling to St Clears it looked like the weather was going to be a repeat of last year's wet conditions but thankful the further West we travelled the rain stopped and the sun shone. The men in green & white did came away with a bonus point win but were made to work hard in the second half and dig deep to score the elusive forth try. The final score was 12-27.

Try scorers were Peter Anson, Ryan Roberts, Rhodri Irving & Steff Davies with Peter also adding two conversions & a penalty kick.

Next week we welcome table topper Tenby to Upper Killay, it should be a great game with both teams starting the season strongly.

SURFs

The boys treated the home support to a feast of tries when they faced Skewen at Fairwood Lane where the final score was 53-5. Skewen to their credit never give up and ended the game with the satisfaction of scoring the last try.

Tries for the Uplands came through Sion Edmunds with a hat trick, Josh Williams with a brace, with Alex Withers, Jordan Williams, Joe Lunness & Iestyn Jones bagging a try each. Alex Withers also kicked four conversions. They only downside to the afternoon was an injury to Joe Lunness who left the pitch with a broken collar bone, we wish Joe a speedy recovery.

A special mention should also go to our latest father & son team mates Shinji Harris was joined on the field by Dad Ben great to see.

It's only two games but a lovely sight to see the SURFs topping the table. It will however be a big test next weekend when they travel to Abercrave.

The 1st XV & SURFs are in action today.

The 1st XV travel West to St Clears whilst the SURFs are at home where they welcome Skewen. The team selections are as shown.

On Sunday it's the turn of the Juniors who have the following fixtures: -

The SURFs started their league fixtures on a rainy day at home to neighbours Gorseinon yesterday in this Smiths Homes fixture.

The conditions didn't help the flow of the game in the opening half with both sides making handling errors & giving away penalties at the breakdown. Unfortunately, many going in favour of the visitors. However it was the men in green & white who scored first with a try after some thirty minutes from centre Sion Edmunds.

The visitors were quick to reply with a penalty taking the score to 5-3. The half time whistle sounded after another successful penalty kick by the visitors following an infringement at the ruck. Half time score 5-6.

The crowd didn't have to wait long for the first points of the second half which came from a handling error by the visitors in their 22. With the referee playing the advantage, the home side applied the pressure ending with number 8 Ryan Roberts going over for a try.

Scrum half Evan Ware was next to cross after the ref played advantage for an illegal tackle. The ball went through the hands of the backline eventually out the scrum half who sped down the left touchline & over for his first senior try. 15-6. Wing Rhodri Irving was next to claim a try with cracking run down the right wing which saw him cross and like any good old head touch down between the posts. The conversion was successful by outside half Tom Edmunds. 22-6. Those were the final points of the game, four tries & a bonus point win apart from the weather a perfect start for the boys.

Lots of positives going forward no more than the performance of last year’s Youth players Sam Grounds, Evan Ware & Shinji Harris who looked very comfortable at senior level. Indeed Evan & Shinji were playing in their first senior match which also saw Evan Ware put in a performance that saw him awarded the Cheers Man of the Match. A great win with a team looking full of potential.

We wish Gorseinon all the very best for the rest of the season.

Next up for the SURFs are Skewen at home on Saturday.
