Rhos 2nds began their Open Trophy journey on Saturday with what some might politely describe as an “experienced side”.
The controversy started before kick-off. Richard Wheel arrived, got kitted up and was ready to go, only to discover a club error meant he hadn’t been registered in time to play. That didn’t stop him joining in the team photo though. 😂
Rhos started on the front foot against Clydach Sports, but an early injury to captain Anthony ‘Poison’ Price forced a change.
Enter super-sub Ian ‘Ianto’ Jones.
Some dogged work from Shane Jones and Alex Carne saw the ball fall to Ianto in the box, and he made no mistake to put Rhos 1-0 up.
Rhos continued to play some nice football, with Richard Medwin causing Clydach’s full-backs plenty of problems, but couldn’t add to the lead before half-time.
Rhos flew out of the blocks after the break. Alex Carne continued to cause the Clydach centre-halves problems, with his pressure eventually resulting in an own goal.
2-0 Rhos.
At the other end, Alun Evans and Mike Dyer had plenty of long balls to deal with and boy did they deal with them.
In the air. On the ground. In the sea. In space.
EVERYWHERE.
The two youngest members of the side, Alex Dowdells and Dom Hayward, were then introduced and combined brilliantly for the third. Dom putting it on a plate for Alex to finish nicely and seal the tie.
Man of the Match could only go to Alun Evans. Colossal at the back once again and continuing the brilliant form he’s shown since signing back. He’s had a special mention pretty much every week and this time there was absolutely no doubt. 👏
A massive thank you to RRS Ltd for sponsoring our new kit. Your support is hugely appreciated by everyone at the club. 💙💛
The boys are into the next round of the Open Trophy… hopefully Wheeler will be registered in time to join us! 😂
