Itโ€™s week and we want you all to stay safe this summer if youโ€™re out and about near water. Listen to the key things to remember ๐Ÿ‘‡

13/06/2026

๐ŸŒŠ Drowning Prevention Month: Submerge & Bounce ๐Ÿ’™

Not every safe water skill is about swimmingโ€”sometimes itโ€™s about problem-solving in the water.

โœ… Ask your child:
What would you do if you unexpectedly fell into deep water and couldnโ€™t touch the bottom?

๐Ÿ’ก What is Submerge & Bounce?
Submerge and bounce is a technique used to help you stay afloat, keep breathing, and move towards safety when you canโ€™t swim continuously.

๐ŸŠ How it works:

โฌ‡๏ธ Submerge

Gently dip under the water

Push down with your hands and feet

โฌ†๏ธ Bounce back up

Use the push to bring yourself back up to the surface

Take a breath each time you rise

๐Ÿ” Repeat the movement

Keep a steady rhythm of down โ†’ up โ†’ breathe

Move gradually towards the side or a safe place

๐Ÿ‘€ Why is this important?

๐Ÿซ Helps you control breathing

Gives you regular chances to take calm breaths

๐Ÿ’ช Builds confidence in deep water

Shows you that you can stay afloat even if you canโ€™t touch the bottom

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Buys you time

Helps you stay above water while waiting for help or finding an exit

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œCan you show how you would bounce up to get a breath?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
Practise this skill in a supervised poolโ€”it helps children feel confident if they ever end up in deeper water.

Letโ€™s build confidence and safety skills that really make a difference ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŠ Key features of survival stroke:

๐ŸŒ Slow, energy-saving movement

Gentle strokes like breaststroke, sidestroke, or long-arm doggy paddle

Helps conserve energy so you donโ€™t tire quickly

โ„๏ธ Heat conservation

Keep your body low and avoid splashing

Reduces heat loss in cold water

๐Ÿ‘€ Sighting (looking ahead)

Regularly lift your head to check your surroundings

Helps you spot a safe exit or rescuers

๐Ÿซ Calm breathing and rhythm

Steady breathing keeps you in control

Helps prevent panic

๐Ÿšซ How is this different from regular swimming?

๐Ÿ Regular swimming:

Fast, powerful strokes

Uses lots of energy

Focused on speed or performance

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Survival stroke:

Slow, controlled, and efficient

Designed to save energy and body heat

Focused on staying safe and afloat

๐Ÿ‘€ Why this is important:

Helps you stay afloat for longer if help isnโ€™t nearby

Reduces the risk of exhaustion

Gives you time to think, signal for help, and plan your next move

๐Ÿ’ก Why learning to swim well matters:

Good swimmers have better technique and control, making survival strokes more effective

Strong swimming skills help you stay calm and manage your breathing in an emergency

Confidence in the water makes it easier to switch from swimming fast to swimming for survival

The stronger your skills, the longer you can conserve energy and stay safe

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œWhy do you think swimming slower could help you survive longer?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
In an emergency: Slow down, stay calm, conserve energy, and keep looking for safety.

Letโ€™s build swimmers who know how to survive, not just swim ๐Ÿ’™

Shout and Signal Rescue 11/06/2026

๐ŸŒŠ Drowning Prevention Month: Shout & Signal Rescue ๐Ÿ’™

The safest way to help someone in trouble in the water is to stay out of the water yourself.

๐ŸŽฅ Watch the RLSS Shout & Signal Rescue video:
๐Ÿ‘‰ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNZd-jBYN5g

โœ… Ask your child:
What would you do if you saw someone struggling in the water?

๐Ÿ’ก Shout & Signal โ€“ what it means:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ SHOUT

Call out: โ€œAre you OK?โ€ or โ€œHelp!โ€

Get the attention of others nearby

Call 999 for help

โœ‹ SIGNAL

Point clearly to where the person is

Wave your arms to guide others or rescuers

Encourage them towards safety (edge, steps, lifebuoy)

๐Ÿšซ Stay out of the water

This is the lowest-risk rescue method

Entering the water could put you in danger too

๐Ÿ‘€ Why this is important:

It keeps you safe while still helping someone in need

You can guide, reassure, and get help quickly

Trained rescuers can then take over safely

๐Ÿ’ฌ Start the conversation:
โ€œWhat would you shout to help someone stay calm?โ€

โœ… Top tip:
Remember: Shout, Signal, get helpโ€”never put yourself at risk.

Letโ€™s give children the confidence to help safely ๐Ÿ’™
