Why we wear traditional karate gi's

Why Karate Uniforms Are Shorter 🥋

If you've ever compared martial arts uniforms, you'll notice that karate gis typically have shorter sleeves and legs than those used in judo or taekwondo. This design wasn't chosen randomly—it has deep historical and practical reasons.

📖 Tradition - Early karate practitioners in Okinawa modified the longer judo-style uniforms by trimming them to allow for faster movement. Over time, this became the standard look of karate.

⚡ Mobility - Karate emphasizes speed, precision, and explosive technique. A shorter uniform ensures that punches, blocks, and kicks aren't slowed down by excess fabric.

👀 Clarity in Technique - Instructors and judges need to clearly see wrist and ankle positions during kata and sparring. A shorter gi makes techniques more visible.

🛡️ Durability - With less loose fabric, there's a lower chance of tearing during intense training.

🎯 Aesthetics – The clean, trim look reflects karate's focus on sharpness, discipline, and efficiency.

The karate gi is more than just clothing; it is part of the art itself, shaped by history and designed to serve the practitioner in every movement.

Happy karate day 🥋

HAPPY WORLD KARATE DAY! 🥳

On this day in 1936, senior masters in Okinawa held a meeting about the future of Karate. 🥋

Originally, the art was known as ”Toudi” (唐手 lit. ”Chinese Hand”) and taught in secrecy…

But now they decided to popularize it! 🌏

The result was a name change to ”Karate”, adopting belts and titles, standardizing styles and implementing a competition format.

If it wasn’t for this historical meeting, maybe Karate wouldn’t exist today.

In the background you can see me practicing kata. ✌️

Hi everyone,
It's is with a broken heart that I must inform all of the BASKA Karate members.
That our Chief Instructor Sensei Greg Wallace has sadly passed away 😢.

Sensei Greg Wallace was the forefront of BASKA Karate and those of us that had the pleasure of meeting him will never forget
him

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Yours Faithfully
Sensei Stephen George
