🟥 Meet the Coach — John (Head Coach), Wakefield AFC U10s Reds
⚽️ How long have you been a coach?
“I’ve coached in youth football for three years and I’m now entering my fourth season.”
👨👦 What inspired you to begin coaching?
“It started through Alfie… From there, it developed into genuinely enjoying helping young players improve, grow in confidence and develop their love for football — while also getting to see Alf’s own love for the game grow.”
🏆 Favourite coaching moment:
“Seeing the boys play in a semi-final against a team we hadn’t beaten before… Everything clicked and they won 6–0. Winning the cup on penalties comes a close second!
Seeing Alfie go from a fringe player to one of the best goalkeepers in the league has made me incredibly proud — as his coach and his Dad.”
🔺 Team in three words:
“Resilient” • “Energetic” • “Together”
🗣️ Coaching motto:
“Head up — have a look!”
“We’re constantly trying to get the boys scanning, looking for space and making decisions.”
🎒 Top tips for players:
“Get a good night’s sleep, eat properly, drink plenty and turn up ready to enjoy yourself.
Don’t worry about mistakes — be brave, work hard and enjoy playing football.”
🎯 Hidden talent:
“Clay pigeon shooting! 🤣”
🧘 Sideline superpower:
“I’d turn down the adrenaline and overstimulation during games!
If I could give them the calmness they show in training while keeping match‑day energy, we’d be laughing!”
💛💙 Team supported:
“Leeds United”
🎵 Intro song of choice:
“Papa Roach – Last Resort
Feeder – Just a Day”
❤️ Best part of coaching:
“Watching the boys develop as footballers and as a team… Seeing their confidence grow, seeing them support each other and seeing how much they enjoy playing together.
They’re a great group with loads of personality — seeing how far they’ve come makes coaching them worthwhile.”
