Just doing something as simple as this exercise at home, which takes only minutes can make a difference - by strengthening the muscles in your legs, you will have better balance which leads to a reduced risk of falls.

Should you improve your balance? 25/05/2026

I’ve just listened to such an incredibly interesting podcast (link below) about why maintaining and improving our balance is so important as we get older. It talks about the types of exercises that help us feel stronger, steadier and more confident , especially after a fall and possible loss of confidence.

Current UK fall prevention guidelines for adults over 65 recommend activities and classes that improve strength, balance, and flexibility - which is exactly what we focus on in my MioLi classes.

The added bonus? The classes are fun, friendly, and sociable too 😊

🤩 We always practice our ONE LEG STAND in our classes.

✅ Try practicing it at home every day to help IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE.
For safety, please ensure you have some support to hand: a chair, kitchen countertop, kitchen sink, or a wall.

✅ By building this into your daily routine you’ll soon start to feel the difference.

I often give my class members ‘homework’ between classes - a reminder to practice some of the balance and strength exercises at home - otherwise known as “exercise snacking” - simple bursts of movement that you can build into everyday life to help you stay strong, supple and well.

It’s as easy as moving whilst the kettle boils - a few heel raises, single leg raises using the countertop as a support, or doing some ‘sit to stands’ when the adverts are on tv. Just adding small movement habits into your daily routine.
