Commanding. Composed. Decisive. 🧤

Max Sykes was one 2 goalkeepers who delivered standout campaigns at the 2025 Budget Energy SuperCupNI and was recognised with a Goalkeeper Award, reflecting his consistency and quality across the tournament.

Max produced a series of assured performances as County Down reached the Boys’ Premier semi-finals.

The awards were presented by Linfield legend and Academy coach Jamie Mulgrew, where both players continue their development at the club.

Well done Max 👌👏⚽️

On behalf of the County Down SuperCupNI Committee, it is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we mark the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Michael Wilson.

Michael was more than a Treasurer to us — he was the steady hand, the quiet presence, and the trusted voice who gave so much of himself to ensure the success and integrity of everything we did. His dedication was never for recognition or praise, but simply because he cared deeply — about the game, about the people involved, and about doing things the right way.

For many years, Michael served our committee with unwavering commitment, bringing not only exceptional diligence and professionalism, but also warmth, humility, and kindness. He had a way of making even the busiest and most challenging moments feel manageable, offering reassurance with his calm manner and thoughtful approach. So much of what we achieve as a committee rests on the unseen work of people like Michael — and he gave that effort selflessly, time and time again.

His lifelong service to football, spanning decades, speaks volumes about the man he was. The countless hours he devoted, the roles he fulfilled, and the trust placed in him across the game are a reflection of his integrity and the respect he earned everywhere he went. But beyond all of that, it is Michael the person we will miss most — his friendship, his gentle nature, and his quiet sense of humour and desire to get the best value from every pound spent.

Michael was one of those rare individuals who made a lasting impression not through words, but through actions — through consistency, loyalty, and genuine care for others. He embodied the very spirit of grassroots football: community, dedication, and togetherness.

His loss leaves a space that cannot be filled, and he will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

At this time of great sorrow, our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with his beloved wife Monina, his children David, Cathy, Jayne and Clare, and the entire family circle. We hope they can take some comfort in knowing just how highly regarded Michael was, and how much he meant to so many within the football family.

Michael’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and in the game he loved so dearly.

He will never be forgotten. 🙏❤️🙏

The County Down SuperCupNI Committee notes the content of the recent press article concerning an individual who was reported as being involved in our coaching staff.

For the avoidance of any doubt, the person referred to has not held any coaching role or had any involvement with the County Down SuperCupNI set-up since 2018.

This position was clearly communicated to the journalist in advance of publication. It is therefore disappointing that this clarification was not reflected in the article.

County Down SuperCupNI remains fully committed to the highest standards of safeguarding, governance and transparency across all of our activities. Any coach or volunteer involved with our programme is subject to the appropriate vetting and appointment procedures.

We trust this statement clarifies the matter and we will be making no further comment at this time.
