U13 SE League v Wexford
In what was our penultimate fixture of the SE league competition, our u13 boys made the trip to O’Driscoll Park to take on neighbours Wexford Wanderers under lights on Friday evening.
With a 7:15 kick-off time, we played into a stiff breeze that blew straight down the middle of the pitch. After early exchanges with both sides eager to set down a marker, our Captain, Mikie Farrell found a way to make it over the white wash to dot down for an early try on 2 minutes to settle the Enniscorthy nerves & Nicholas Curtis added the additional 2 points. On 7 minutes Mikie found himself touching down again for our second try to the left of the sticks with the conversion this time just falling away.
In what was a cool crisp evening for rugby both sides were eager to play the ball out wide so tackling & competition at the breakdown was ferocious. After good phase play and hard yards earned by our pack, some quick hands from our half back pairing of Ryan and Alfie put our centre Adam Byrne into space who finished nicely out wide on the left.
15 mins on the clock, Scorthy 17 points to the good.
Wexford after kick off, stuck to task and were awarded with a great score of their own under the posts 2 minutes before half time & they added the conversion to keep themselves in the game.
Half time (20 mins) Wexford 7 / Scorthy 17
Playing with the breeze in the second half, we were awarded a penalty on 3 minutes in front of the posts. After consulting his pack, Captain Mikie pointed to the posts with Nicholas converting to keep the score board ticking over. Score 20-7.
Both sides contested scrums & lineouts really well under the guidance of the appointed Leinster branch referee. With only a hand full of scrum’s in the game, ball in play time was high. Tackling by both sides was strong and after a few phases Mikie Farrell powered over for his hatrick half way through the second half.
Wexford carried the ball well in the second half and had some purple patches when they got the ball out wide to their wingers and got over the gain line. With Wexford pressing high and applying pressure this left space in behind where we returned some nice kicks into space, got Wexford going backwards & our wingers applying pressure. On 35 mins we were awarded a penalty for a Wexford infringement and again we chose to go to the posts where we added the 3 points.
37 minutes; Scorthy 28 / Wexford 7.
With time nearly up, Wexfords effort of hard carrying and ball in hand were greatly rewarded when they touched down for a great individual try 1 minute before the end. The resulting conversion was unlucky & drifted just wide with the strong breeze.
Full time recorded score
(40 mins) Wexford 12 / Scorthy 28
With both teams having large panels, the 3 x 20 minute match format was utilised & this gave both management teams a chance to give game time to the extended panels. Wexford not to be out done, hit us early to get 3 tries and add the additionals as they scored under the posts. Both sides continued to try get the ball wide and expose space on the flanks. After some strong carries by our pack and equally good defence by Wexford who got caught a little narrow, quick hands and two passes out beyond the ruck put Charlie FitzGerald into space with a strong run from the Wexford 22 & under pressure from Wexford defenders touched down at the death.
Both sides played the game to a really high standard and no doubt will see each other at some stage later in the season.
Thanks to Wexford for hosting & providing refreshments afterwards.
