The Íslensk Premier League (ÍPL), the world's most popular T20 franchise tournament in the sub-Arctic sponsored by Big Ant Studios, is in its early stages, but you can still see how the league table is taking shape. A bit of bad weather blighted the opening day, but still two completed games so far.

Reykjavík scored an impressive 213/3 in beating Garðabær by 64 runs. Derick Deonarain's explosive knock of 83 runs off 38 balls, including an Icelandic record of five consecutive sixes, was the mainstay of the innings, with Dushan Bandara's 53* off 25 balls keeping up the momentum. In response, Bala Kamallakharan's innings of 52 was valiant but ultimately insufficient to stave off defeat.

Later in the day at Hamranesvöllur, one of the most exciting ÍPL matches in history took place, which culminated in the first ever Super Over in Iceland cricket. After a powerful start by the top order, driven by Azmare Sarwari's 38 off 22 balls, Kópavogur were restricted to 131/9 off 200 overs, having lost 7-29 in 7 overs. Muhammad Younas took 3-19 with his clever slow-medium pace bowling.

Hafnarfjörður Hammers, the defending champions, looked in trouble at 49/5, with David Cook (4-21) ripping through the top order. But Kamal Muhammad's solid knock of 44 and great cameos of 33 and 21 by Arslan Naeem and Ihsanullah Zarinza, respectively, kept them in the hunt. However, when Naeem was bowled, the scores were tied and the game entered new territory for Iceland cricket - the Super Over! Both sides hit a six and a four, but it was Hafnarfjörður Hammers who edged it by 1 run (14-13). A great win and match to get the season going!
