We were visiting today from Dorking, England... a small town just outside London. Our home event is Mole Valley parkrun, held in the Denbies Wine Estate. Come and visit us if you are in the area. We are spending one week in the west of Sicily, and one week in the east. We are very happy to be able to do 2 parkruns while we are here.

When I told people at home that I would be driving through Palermo to get to Favorita parkrun, they asked me if I really wanted to drive in the city. Two Italians at work told me it would be scary. I learned to drive in London, so I decided to try anyway, and it was fine with the satnav helping. If you are a tourist thinking of driving to Favorita, do it.

We parked on Viale Rocca, just a few metres from the Start. We heard there were toilets at the nearby Palme Stadium, but the gates were locked. Something to consider if you have a long journey. As we walked back across the park we saw several fitness classes in progress, and people using the outdoor gym equipment. It was great to see so many people taking the opportunity to be outside, together, and moving - the ingredients that make parkrun so good.

We were greeted at the Start by Pasquale and Claudia. Claudia explained in excellent English that the paths were uneven, that the course would be 3 laps today to give us more time in the shade, and that we should be careful of branches on the route. We met a few other visitors from the UK... one lady recognised my running club shirt and said that she grew up in Dorking. A small world!

I did not understand much of the main briefing, which was given in Italian, but visitors were welcomed and I think there may have been a milestone celebrated. We joined in with the applause, and were pleased to be part of the positive and friendly atmosphere that we always find at parkrun. Then it was three, two, one, go!
The course was very well-marked, with ribbons and arrows at every turn. The paths were uneven but perfectly safe if you watch where you place your feet. The trails are beautiful, and the shade meant that it was comfortable, even in the 29C temperature. Thank you to the organisers for giving us so much shade.
As I write this, the results are not yet out, but I was very pleased to receive a single-digit token. Most of my local parkruns have more than 300 finishers, so even getting in the first 100 is rare for me. Thank you so much to the volunteers for allowing us to take part today.
