Carlos Alcaraz is back from recovering from a wrist injury, and this is one of the drills he used to prepare for his return to the ATP Tour. At first glance, it looks like he’s just hitting with a racket that has a hole in it. But that’s not the real purpose. This drill is all about rebuilding his spacing. When you’ve been away from tennis—whether it’s because of an injury, a long break, or you’re still learning—one of the first things you lose is your ability to judge the correct distance from the ball. A shadow swing can help you rehearse your technique, but it can’t teach you where the ball actually is. By hitting a real ball with a racket that has a much smaller sweet spot, Alcaraz has to move his feet precisely and recreate the exact spacing he needs for clean contact. If he’s even slightly too close or too far away, he’ll miss. He’s playing with no strings to reduce shock on his recovering right wrist. It’s a great reminder that timing doesn’t just come from your swing—it starts with your footwork and your spacing.
