Profile of Master Lim Cheng Poh (Cheng Poh)

Cheng Poh was born and raised in Malaysia. He commenced his Karate training when he was 16 years old under the late Grandmaster Jimmy Loh Tham Sang, co-founder and the Chief Instructor of Shotokan Karate-Do Association Of Malaysia. He is amongst the first batch of students to be awarded black belts by Grandmaster Jimmy Loh in Shotokan Karate-Do Malaysia and has had been one of the grandmaster favorite students.

Currently ranked 6th Dan, awarded in 2003, and was the National Karate Coach for Traditional Karate Federation Norway.

A brief timeline/highlight of his karate path and career :

1974​ :
Was in the Malaysia contingent that competed in the 6-Nation Karate Tournament held in Manila, Philippines. He competed against Masahiko Tanaka, the legendary World JKA Kumite Champion, in a match which was refereed by the legendary Hirokazu Kanazawa (the present Kancho of Shotokan Karate International Federation). Though he lost the match, the experience on the mats will always remain an all time highlight in his karate life.

1976 :
Moved to Sweden. Became acquainted with Master Masao Kawasoe, another famous JKA instructor and competitor. Meeting Kawasoe sensei has opened another dimension and development in karate for Cheng Poh.

1984 to 1987 :
Represented JKA Sweden. Nationally was placed among the top 3 in both Kumite and Kata competitions. Officially retired from competitions in 1988.

1990 :
Moved to Iceland when he was engaged as the main instructor of two Shotokan clubs on the island.

1992 :
Moved to Norway, became the main instructor in Tsunami Shotokan Club Holmlia and Marienlyst Karateklubb in Drammen. In addition, he became the National Coach for the Norwegian Traditional Karate Federation while holding the posts of Chief Technical Director and Chief Referee. He has been a judge and official in various international tournaments in Europe. He has lived in Norway for 26 years.

June 2018 :
Moved back to Sweden but still commute regularly to Norway to conduct trainings and seminar.

Merits Of Championship :

1982 Swedish National Championship – Kata, Silver Medal.
1983 Swedish National Championship – Kata, Silver Medal.
1984 Swedish National Championship – Kumite, Silver Medal.
1988 Swedish National Championship – Kumite, Gold Medal.
Kata, Bronze Medal.
1988 Recognized by Swedish National Karate-Do Association as one of the top 3 in both Kata and Kumite.

Current Responsibility :

1992 :
Appointed as the National Coach for Norwegian Traditional Karate Federation in both Kata and Kumite.

1992 :
Appointed as the Chief Technical Director and Chief Referee of Norwegian Traditional Karate Federation.

1992 to 2018 :
Referee in international championship sanctioned by International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF), European Traditional Karate Federation (ETKF) and JKA Afro-EurAsia Championship.

Master Lim Cheng Poh return back to Malaysia for holiday and host a one-day seminar to his past comrades and juniors in Malaysia.

Our Grandmaster, Mr. Jimmy Loh Tham Sang, had the honor of inheriting this distinguished martial arts tradition during his formative years under the mentorship of his esteemed master, Mr. Emmanuel Del Espiritu Santo Querubin.

Mr. Emmanuel, a renowned Karate Grandmaster, played a pioneering role in the introduction and promotion of Shotokan-style Karate during its early development in Malaysia.

In addition to his mastery of Shotokan-style Karate, he is also the Grandmaster of Sikaran, a traditional Filipino martial art, further demonstrating his unparalleled expertise and contributions to the world of martial arts.
