Think about what you know about systems.

In Agile you learned that a system only performs as well as your understanding of it runs deep. You know what it means to truly map a system. To understand why something breaks down under pressure and fix it at the root rather than the surface.

You would never accept working on a system you only half understood. The idea of optimising a process without grasping its underlying logic would strike you as absurd. Expensive. Embarrassing, even. Right?

And yet.

The most critical system in every sprint, every retrospective, every stakeholder meeting, every team you have ever worked in is one that almost nobody has ever seriously studied.

People.

This year I turn 60. Here is what I find genuinely astonishing, after more than thirty years of character-aware working in organisations, training teams, coaching executives, mediating conflicts and educating coaches and leaders.

We invest years learning our profession to extraordinary depth. And when it comes to the human factor, the one that determines whether everything else succeeds or fails, we consider it perfectly normal to learn through trial and error.

Through the colleague we never quite figured out. Through the relationship that cost the team six months of momentum. Through the slow, expensive process of bumping into people until we develop some feel for them.

Imagine if you had learned Agile that way.

What if you can acquire in just five days, a character-aware map and learn the underlying logic of how nine fundamentally different character structures actually work?

Europe has a long lineage and tradition of inner work and philosophy.

From Pythagoras and his school of number and harmony, through the Neoplatonists, the mystics of the Middle Ages, Spinoza, Nietzsche and Jung, to Gurdjieff who brought the Enneagram symbol and his Fourth Way teachings to the West exactly 100 years ago.

A lineage of mystery schools and philosophical traditions rooted in one question: what does it mean to truly know yourself? The harmonious development of man.

Europeans carry this in their cultural DNA without being aware of it. The European approach to the Enneagram reflects it.

So what is this approach about? An attempt to give an impression.

At its heart, it is about transformation. Not just knowing and understanding.

We use the Enneagram symbol itself as a guide through ten stages of a complete transformational process.

It is working from a place of genuine curiosity rather than certainty. Questions open more than answers ever could. So we philosophise rather than debate.

We hold the nine character structures not as fixed labels but as mirrors and navigation tools, offering guidance on a journey of genuine inquiry. Self-observation, self-reflection and self-remembrance are key.

The theory of the nine character structures, as introduced by Oscar Ichazo and later worked out in depth by Claudio Naranjo and Helen Palmer, is of course fully integrated in our approach.

Knowing our European cultural roots, it is no coincidence that so many Europeans, myself included, were drawn to the Narrative Tradition of Helen Palmer and Dr David Daniels in the 1990s.

It came closest to our European spirit: learning through real people, real stories, real presence. That is why it is the root of our school.

Peter O'Hanrahan has been teaching in this tradition worldwide from the very beginning in the 1980s. I have been carrying this work in Europe since I entered the programme in 1998.

This July we are teaching the Enneagram Intensive together. In the European approach.

The gathering itself is a practice. A way of keeping your inner work awake. A way of staying conscious on the path. A way of inspiring one another.

Last time we went deep. Gurdjieff's Fourth Way, the concept of Objective and Subjective Consciousness and what it brings to our inner work and growth path. Not the lightest of topics, but the different perspectives and experiences led to new insights, fresh inspiration and for one participant even a revelation connected to an experience earlier that day. Even a short session like this can have real impact.

For 3 June, something a little lighter. We are moving towards the Summer solstice on 21 June. The longest light of the year.

What a date to gather: 3-6. In the Enneagram, 3 and 6 are cornerstones of the inner triangle and the hexagram. Add them: 9. Completion before the turn. Go further: 3-6-2026 = 19. In the Tarot, card 19 is the Sun. Not just any light. Conscious light. And 21-6? 2 + 1 = 3. We come full circle.
