📊 Gym Injury Claims Are Rising - But Here's What the Data Actually Tells Us

Recent ACC data shows more than 60,000 gym-related injury claims were lodged in New Zealand in 2024.

At first glance, that number sounds alarming. But it's important to understand the bigger picture.

As gym participation continues to grow across New Zealand, it's expected that injury numbers will rise too. More people training means more people moving, lifting, exercising, and unfortunately, sometimes getting injured.

What the data consistently shows is that the vast majority of gym injuries are soft tissue strains and sprains rather than serious injuries.

The common factors linked to injury risk include:

✔ Poor technique
✔ Unstructured training
✔ Doing too much, too soon
✔ Lack of guidance or supervision

The solution isn't avoiding the gym.

In fact, strength training remains one of the most effective ways to improve health, maintain independence, reduce injury risk, and improve quality of life, especially as we age.

The focus should be on training smarter:

• Learning proper technique
• Following a structured programme
• Progressing gradually
• Seeking guidance when needed

Yesterday the Blue Brothers stepped out of the group fitness room and into the gym floor again 💪

These men living with cancer continue to show up, support each other, and prove that strength comes in many forms. From bikes to weights to functional exercises, it was awesome to see everyone giving it a go.

Exercise isn’t just about fitness. It’s about confidence, connection, movement, and quality of life.

💗 Curve It - Women’s Class 💗

We hit a new record on Monday with 20 women in class - our full capacity! 💛

ACC-accredited since December 2025, the classes include strength, balance, cardio and mobility, all in a supportive and welcoming environment.

The average age of our Curve It ladies is 72, and many began their fitness journey at the former Curves Gym in Ashburton.

Because the class is growing, we’re excited to trial a new Tuesday class at 10:30am for the next 4-weeks.
