Catherine Mimuro Sensei [Godan]
Yokohama International Aikido Club

Why did you initially try out Aikido?

I wanted to be a ballerina when I was young and when I watch Aikido the movements are very graceful, especially when the techniques are done well and the uke follows well So I get a lot of satisfaction from movement in Aikido.

Why do you continue?

I enjoy it. There is a nice social side to it as well - the people who come make the club. Continuously developing your technique, making it better is enjoyable, that is why.

What is your favourite technique?

Shomen uchi irimi nage has a beautiful movement - I love movement.

What is one thing that Aikido taught you?

Have a relaxed, calm state of mind when under stress.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about trying it for the first time?

It not easy, you need a lot of practice, but when you do the first technique to its completion you get an immense sense of satisfaction. And you can keep learning.

Mimuro Shihan: Nanadan Yokohama International Aikido Club.

Why did you initially try out Aikido?
I wanted to start Judo again at Meiji University, but I found Aikido first and I decided I wanted to
do Aikido, much more than Judo.

Why do you continue?
I like Aikido very much.

What is your favourite technique?
That is hard, there are so many.. any katate dori technique.

What is one thing that Aikido taught you?
I like the philosophy and techniques of my Aikido Sensei, Seigo Yamaguchi. I want to continue
with this.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about trying it for the first time?
Lets try. It is very easy to know.

Terry Mah: Rokyudan Seiryukan

Why did you initially try out Aikido?
I’ve known about, and been interested in, Aikido for a long time but didn’t have the time to commit to it. Then after I started working for myself, I saw an article in The Star for kids’ classes at Burnside which is not far from where we were living, I took my daughter and son there to try. They liked it and joined up, and I joined the adults’ classes a few months later. That was 26 years ago. My children have stopped training but “The Ancient” is still puffing along!

Why do you stay?
Aikido is a journey; it does not bring instant gratification as a martial art.
Health-wise, Aikido teaches the body to move more efficiently.

What is your favourite technique?
Iriminage.

What is one thing Aikido taught you?
There’s always something new to learn.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about trying it for the first time?
Be patient and enjoy the journey.

A beautiful tanto - a gift from Ross Szuba & the Carlisle Dojo. The tanto, scabbard and mounting were all made by Ross including the hand grip from ray skin. The blade of the tanto was made from a 100 year old file.
