The most beautiful part of this project has been connecting it back to values I was taught at the New Zealand Warriors.

I was taught that you never own the jersey. You carry it for a moment. You respect and honour it, and while it is with you, your responsibility is to open the door for the next generation.

To teach them their craft. To guide them through mistakes. To show them hard work. To remind them confidence is built, not given. To help them understand talent means nothing without values.

That is what the Warriors taught me.

How to keep turning up for yourself when it is hard. How to respect your elders, communicate honestly, stay positive, and walk with humility. How to understand there will be tough times and good times and you do not ride either alone. You ride together. Side by side. As a team. As whānau.

That is kotahitanga.

That is what made this journey with my niece grace so special.

She comes from Lebanese descent, raised in a multicultural family, connected to a multicultural country and team. Now, at 19, she is leaning into her Māori heritage in her own way. She is asking questions, finding connection, and allowing the wairua of this kaupapa to move through her.

To watch her bring that spirit out through her art, through every line and detail in the Kotahitanga gripper, is something I will never forget.

For me, this became more than a jersey. It became a chance to take her with me. To shine a light on her beauty, talent, culture, and the confidence growing inside her. To show her she belongs here. That her story matters.

That is what the next generation needs. Not to be torn down, but nurtured. Challenged with love. Taught that mistakes are lessons, doors are earned, and growth comes from doing the one percenters.

That is life. Taking people with you.

That is what the New Zealand Warriors represent. A team. A collective. A place where cultures meet, walls break, and people are taught not just how to be talented, but how to be good humans.

This is bigger than a jersey. It is legacy, culture, confidence, and the next generation stepping forward with pride.

That is kotahitanga.
