Members Notice.

The tournament schedule for this week will be delayed until later today or tomorrow, along with the updated points standings.

However, our usual weekly games should run as normal as possible this week and will be held back in the poker room starting with Bruce as TD for tonight.

There will be no weekend games this week to allow the committee a well-earned break following the recent workload associated with the North Island Champs.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Clubs NZ – North Island Poker Championships Wrap

The 2026 Clubs NZ North Island Poker Championships brought 263 players from 20 clubs to Hamilton for a massive weekend hosted by the HWMC Committee. Despite weather disruptions and travel delays, players arrived in strong spirits, ready for one of the most anticipated events on the poker calendar.

Friday’s Welcome Game drew more than 140 entries and was building quickly when play was paused due to a medical emergency. We were deeply saddened of the passing of Mac Tevita of the Mangere Cosmopolitan Club. Our heartfelt condolences go to Mac’s whānau and to the wider Mangere Cossie Club community.

After consultation with the clubs present, Friday night’s event was cancelled. In an extraordinary show of compassion, the majority of players asked for their refunds to be added to the koha for Mac’s family, which continued to grow throughout the weekend. It was a powerful reminder of the strength and unity within the Clubs poker community.

The Mangere team returned on Saturday with renewed determination. Our sincere thanks go to Herewaina Tumahai, who not only arranged for a Kaumātua to bless the poker room—an important moment shared with those in attendance before play resumed—but also supported Mac’s family while they were on site.

With unexpected changes required, members from clubs across the region stepped in without hesitation. Their willingness to help ensured the tournament stayed on track. There are too many names to list, but please know your efforts were seen and deeply appreciated.

The first qualification flight began only slightly behind schedule. With 263 players competing across two venues, communication and coordination were tested like never before. Thanks to steady teamwork, the second flight restarted with minimal delay and wrapped up just after 11 pm.

Finals Day again ran across both venues, with the team focused on delivering the experience players deserved. Committee members and local helpers stepped into every role required, ensuring a smooth and professional finish.

The final table delivered a fitting and heartfelt conclusion. In a moment that reflected the spirit of the weekend, Rex showed his true character, allowing Chris Tau to claim the title for Mangere—an act that honoured their beloved teammate, Mac Tevita, in the most meaningful way possible.

A special thank you to the HWMC Committee—Andy, Andrew, Frank, Kaz, Duddies, Frazier, and Mel—and to Christine, Marama, Judith, Here, and Tracy for stepping in wherever needed. Your professionalism under pressure turned a challenging weekend into a successful, well‑run event that received heartfelt positive feedback from across the Clubs community.

A huge shout out and thank you to Nathan and his team at HWMC for your professionalism, flexibility and for supporting all of us and the attending clubs/players.

Take a well‑earned breather. We look forward to seeing you all next year at Manurewa.
