On Sunday night in our journal circle, we got to thinking about listening in - to ourselves.
If you've ever been to one of my yoga classes you will likely know this is something I am passionate about! My focus is not on you achieving a certain pose, or looking a certain way, but instead on helping you build your awareness of how your body feels. For me - this is what yoga is all about. (There's many added benefits for sure, like strength, flexibility, balance - but for me these aren't the primary goal).
I was drawn to yoga as a way to calm a nervous system that was used to being predominantly in overdrive. Through yoga I experienced the sensations of feeling - momentarily at first - a sense of spaciousness, stillness, and peace. A sense of being able to recognise what my body craved (I kid you not - it was vegetables after almost every one of my first yoga classes in my 20s...)
Listening in is something I am used to doing - when I practice yoga. But the practice of attuning into our bodies, our experiences, goes far beyond that - and this is a practice I am still working on. I expect it will be a lifelong practice. And that's ok.
I've been dipping into listening in all week - to decisions I've made that haven't felt quite right, to areas where I've felt overwhelm, to a sense of discomfort in my abdomen, and deciding to pursue a healing practice I've been thinking about (and putting off) for ages as a result; and noticing where I've started to be more true to myself in decisions I make and actions I take - this one has been powerful.
Listening is powerful. When we listen to others - to truly hear them, not just to respond. And when we listen to ourselves, and allow ourselves to trust what we hear.
