Have you ever wondered why glowworms actually glow?

The beautiful sparkling lights are actually a clever hunting strategy. The glowworms use their bioluminescence to lure insects into their traps in the darkness of the cave.

The shimmering, bead like strings hanging around them are made from silk laced with tiny sticky droplets and catch any insects that get too close to the alluring lights.
Fortunately for us, we get to enjoy their beauty without any risk of being eaten.

Along side this stunning glowworm close up, this week brings shots from the Lost World cave and some of the rock formations from the Haggas Honking Holes.

Want to tackle Waitomo’s wildest adventures, but feeling a little nervous about the prep? We’ve got you covered!

Before anyone steps foot inside the cave, we run through a couple of simple tests back at base to check your mobility and strength. Once you're cleared, you'll head off to get kitted out in your gear, where your guides will make sure everything is secure and properly fitted.
Last stop before heading underground: a quick brief on any safety procedures you'll need to know while you're down below.
Your guides will be with you every step of the way, giving you advice and support as you navigate the cave, so you're always in safe hands!
