Wheelworks Handcrafted Wheels

Every year Engineering students from the University of Canterbury attempt a human-powered land speed record.

Pictured is last years Mako, and we've just built this wheel for their 2026 vehicle.

They needed a wheel with good lateral stiffness, low-drag bearings, and a 135mm quick-release axle to work around their 2026 design. The rim is 650b diameter, tubeless ready, and will have a 32mm Continental GP5000S TR tyre fitted.

They'll pair our rear wheel with two 20" off-the-shelf front trike wheels.

This pair of fatbike wheels with customer-supplied Nextie carbon rims and Alaska hubs are off down South.

Whether it's fat wheels, little wheels, road wheels, or mountain bike wheels we've got the components, tools and knowledge to build them to the highest possible quality.

There's lot of chat about 32" wheels at the moment, but we work on both ends of the spectrum.

Do you have a wheel which breaks spokes? We can probably stop that.

We've talked a lot (and done a whole youtube video) about why spoke break, and we can rebuilt most brands / models of wheel to ensure they don't continue to fail.
