After his unsuccessful tilt at Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight crown, kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven’s next step could be a showdown with former champion Deontay Wilder on the Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua undercard on December 11.

Revealing the offer during an appearance on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan show on Thursday, Verhoeven said: “After that fight [with Usyk], we got a bunch of offers from all different sides and directions, so that was good to see.

“We slowly took everything in and took a look at all the offers and opponents, and I’ve decided I am going to stay in boxing.

“We got an offer for the December 11 card.

“I can’t confirm just yet [that I will be on the card].

“What I can confirm is that they offered me a fight with Deontay Wilder, and I said yes.

“Of course, the details still need to be talked about. I’m waiting on the response.

“So if there is a yes from the other side, then it is going to happen.”

Assuming he beats WBC super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli later this month, Canelo Alvarez intends to stay busy as he enters the twilight of his glittering career.

“I want to fight quickly, like in February, something like that,” Alvarez said in an interview with The Ring’s Mike Coppinger. “And then we’ll see what’s next.”

He also revealed a long-held ambition to fight in Japan, inspired by watching Oscar Larios.

“I hope I have the opportunity to fight in Japan,” he said. “It’s one of my dreams because I grew up with Oscar Larios, and he fought with a lot of Japanese guys, and I saw him. For me it’s a dream to fight in Japan. I hope it happens. If not, it’s fine, but it’s one of my dreams. I hope I can accomplish that.”

Alvarez will enter the Mbilli fight as the challenger for the first time in years, but says his mindset hasn’t changed.

“I always want to put on a great show, do my best in the ring, and win the fight,” he said. “It’s important to always be a world champion. I’ve been a world champion for so many years, so this is the first time I’m going to be a challenger against Mbilli. It’s not familiar to me, but I always feel like a champion.

“I don’t have anything to prove because I know who I am. I know how much I accomplished in boxing. I know how I feel. I still enjoy boxing. I love boxing, and that’s why I’m here.”

Canelo Alvarez has made it clear that a rematch with Terence Crawford remains high on his agenda, provided he gets past Christian Mbilli in their October 31 showdown in Riyadh, having told The Ring that he is eager to face the American again.

“I always do good in the rematches, so I hope that fight happen again. [I’ve watched it] like five times, and it was very close. There was not much [in it]. Like I said, there was very little [in it] to have the win or loss. I know what happened, and I know my mistakes. He is a great fighter, and you need to be one hundred percent [to face him].”

Few perspectives are more intriguing than that of someone who has shared the ring with both fighters, and newly crowned WBA lightweight champion Floyd Schofield has weighed in on the rumoured clash between Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson in an interview with Sean Zittel.

“We would have to wait and see on fight night. I think that there are different things that both of them do well. I feel like it would just be a real technical fight.”

While Schofield expects a closely contested technical battle, he believes Haney’s physical attributes and proven ability to hurt opponents could give him the edge.

“I think that I would favour Devin because, even though he is not a crazy power-puncher, we have seen how he was able to put Brian Norman Jr. on the floor – that is something we haven’t seen before.

“The reach, the size, the boxing skill [make me favour Devin].”
