A traffic light, a nearby vehicle, a person about to cross: drivers take in more than one signal before deciding what to do.

That makes human driving difficult to capture in a model.

The same situation can lead to different responses, and those differences matter when automated vehicles share the road with people.

Understanding those choices is at the heart of BERTHA, an EU-funded project developing an open driver behavior model for complex traffic environments.

Smart Eye contributes data on driver state and behavior to help ground the model in how people actually respond on the road.

BERTHA combines simulator research with work in real vehicles. The video shows some of that work: a car detects a person crossing the road and stops automatically.

The broader project supports the development of future driver assistance and safety systems.

Today, Smart Eye is unveiling a world-first multimodal in-cabin AI agent.

Rather than relying mainly on voice and vehicle data, the agent can also understand who the driver is, where they’re looking, their attention and state, who else is in the cabin, and what’s happening around the vehicle.

That richer context helps the agent understand what the driver means, decide what to do next, and take action through connected vehicle functions and services.

In the live demonstration, it can also use gaze together with exterior sensing to understand what a driver is referring to outside the vehicle, and create dashboard widgets using live driver and cabin data.

starts this week, and Smart Eye will be demonstrating a new camera-radar solution developed together with NOVELIC at booth #305.

The solution combines Smart Eye’s camera-based interior sensing with NOVELIC’s 60 GHz radar in an edge-processed system for driver and occupant monitoring.

Processing the software directly on the sensor is designed to reduce the need for external hardware, additional vehicle interfaces, and computational resources elsewhere in the car, while supporting driver monitoring, occupant monitoring, and child presence detection use cases.

The most effective Driver Monitoring System (DMS) is one that drivers don’t switch off. 🚗

That sounds obvious, but it has big implications for how should be designed and regulated.

In a new article, Smart Eye’s Victor Brandt looks at the gap between technical compliance and real-world acceptance. A system can meet the rules and still issue enough unnecessary or intrusive warnings to lose the driver’s trust.

If people understand the system, see the value in it, and keep it on, the safety benefit has a much better chance of surviving contact with the real world.

Cameras and radar see the vehicle interior differently. Together, they can tell us more.

Smart Eye and Murata are demonstrating a new camera-radar sensor fusion approach that combines detailed visual information from in-cabin cameras with 60 GHz radar data that can detect occupants in darkness, through clothing and blankets, and when parts of the body are obscured.

By bringing those signals together, the system can build a more complete picture of occupant position, posture, and activity across the cabin.

For manufacturers, that can also mean less reliance on separate occupancy sensors, simpler integration, and potentially lower system complexity and BOM cost.

The technology will be demonstrated at InCabin Europe, September 22-24, in Barcelona.

Systems (DMS) are set to become mandatory in another major automotive market. 🇯🇵

Japan is preparing new requirements for in all new vehicle models from September 2031, covering both driver distraction and drowsiness. Existing models would follow from 2033.

With mandatory DMS already in force in Europe, the regulatory momentum behind driver monitoring is continuing to build globally.
