The Double Leg Stretch is everything you can learn about "control" in Pilates. A staple of the STOTT PILATES® Matwork repertoire, this move is the ultimate test of core endurance and limb coordination, challenging you to stay centered while your body moves in opposite directions.

It lies in the in abdominal stabilisation. As your arms and legs reach away from your center, your core must work overtime to maintain a stable, imprinted (or neutral) pelvis against the increasing lever weight.

Simple is not always the easiest, but it is always the best 🫡

Roll-Down using the Roll-Down Bar is the perfect move to articulate the spine and find that sweet balance between effort and ease. In the STOTT PILATES® method, this isn't just about moving up and down; it’s a deep dive into spinal mobility and sequential control.

The focus of this exercise lies in the segmental articulation of the spine. By using the spring resistance, you're able to decompress the vertebrae, creating space and length while firing up the deep abdominals.

Focus on the breath: Inhale to prepare, and exhale as you melt into the mat, one vertebra at a time.

If you’re looking to combat the "desk slouch" and reclaim your posture, Reverse Expansion is your best friend in the STOTT PILATES® repertoire.

This exercise is a masterclass in functional elegance, focusing on opening the chest while simultaneously strengthening the muscles that support a tall, proud spine.

Unlike many exercises that focus solely on the front of the body, Reverse Expansion emphasises the posterior chain. As you press the straps back, you’re engaging the rhomboids and posterior deltoids to stabilise the shoulder blades, teaching your body how to maintain scapular "placement" rather than just "tension."

The real secret, however, lies in the core. Staying upright and steady on a moving carriage requires deep activation of the transverse abdominis and obliques, ensuring that your strength comes from the center out.

Pro Tip: Focus on sliding those shoulder blades into your "back pockets" and breathe into the space you're creating.
