Love this illustration of incorrectly used inside rein vs correctly. Notice the horse on the left is twisting the vertebrae in its neck and compensating with the inside hind leg.

In the sport of barrel racing we do a lot of small circles and once you’ve trained your eye to this you can’t unsee it running rampant. The horse also loses power because he can’t track underneath himself and push his body forward straight and powerfully. The horse on the right is engaging his core and rib cage, I was nearly 10 years into riding before I FELT this at the walk at a Ryan Lovendahl clinic. Your horse’s rib cage should be supple and moving with you not against you. Let’s ride our horses sound! Advanced riders love to work on basics and can feel problems at a walk before they become an issue.
