Honoring the Light: International Yoga Day, the Summer Solstice & Community Connection

Each year, two meaningful celebrations arrive almost simultaneously: International Yoga Day and the Summer Solstice.

Both invite us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters.

The Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year—a moment when the sun reaches its fullest expression. For thousands of years, cultures around the world have celebrated the solstice as a time of abundance, gratitude, growth, and transformation.

In yoga, the sun holds special significance. Traditional Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) were created as a moving expression of reverence for the life-giving energy that sustains us. The sun symbolizes vitality, awareness, and the inner light that exists within each of us.

Similarly, International Yoga Day, celebrated annually on June 21st, recognizes yoga's profound impact on physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. While many people first come to yoga for flexibility, strength, or stress relief, the practice offers so much more.

At Anacortes Yoga Sanctuary, we often talk about the Eight Limbs of Yoga—the philosophy that reminds us yoga extends far beyond the poses we practice on our mats.

The Eight Limbs invite us to cultivate:

Compassion and integrity (Yamas)

Self-awareness and personal growth (Niyamas)

Physical practice (Asana)

Breathwork (Pranayama)

Turning inward (Pratyahara)

Focus (Dharana)

Meditation (Dhyana)

Connection and integration (Samadhi)

The Summer Solstice offers a beautiful opportunity to reflect on these teachings. What have you cultivated this year? What intentions have grown? Where might you create more space for balance, presence, and joy?

Summer Solstice: A Special Yin Yoga Practice
To honor this seasonal turning point, we're offering a special gathering at the Sanctuary.

Join us for a nourishing Yin Yoga practice as we celebrate the longest day of the year and welcome the energy of summer. Through long-held postures, mindful breathing, and quiet reflection, we'll create space to soften, receive, and reconnect. Yin Yoga invites us to slow down, listen inward, and embrace stillness—qualities that can be difficult to find in our busy daily lives.

Just as the sun reaches its peak before beginning its gradual return, this practice encourages us to pause and appreciate where we are in our own journeys. Together, we'll honor both the light around us and the light within us.

All levels are welcome.

Healing Through Movement: A Nurse's Perspective
At Anacortes Yoga Sanctuary, yoga is deeply connected to our roots in healthcare. Both Heather and I are nurses, and throughout our careers we've had the privilege of caring for people during some of life's most challenging and transformative moments.

We've witnessed firsthand how stress, grief, burnout, chronic illness, and life's daily demands affect the body, mind, and spirit. We've also seen the incredible resilience of the human body when given the opportunity to rest, heal, and reconnect.

While yoga is not a replacement for medical care, it can be a powerful complement to overall wellness. Breathwork, mindful movement, meditation, and community support can help regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, improve mobility, and cultivate a greater sense of well-being.

International Yoga Day serves as a beautiful reminder that health is about more than the absence of disease. It is about creating balance, fostering connection, and nurturing ourselves in ways that allow us to thrive.

As nurses and yoga teachers, our goal is to create a space where every student feels welcomed, supported, and cared for—whether you're stepping onto a mat for the very first time or have been practicing for years.

More Ways to Connect:
Yoga is about more than movement—it's also about community.

Whether you're stepping onto a yoga mat or joining a kickboxing class, our goal is to help you feel stronger, more connected, and more confident in your body.

Looking Ahead: Nourish, Flow & Heal Retreat
As we embrace the energy of summer, we're also looking ahead to one of our favorite events of the year.

Our Nourish, Flow & Heal Retreat has been rescheduled to October 17–18.

This retreat is designed as an opportunity to step away from daily responsibilities and reconnect with yourself through movement, mindfulness, nourishing food, meaningful conversation, and community. Whether you're seeking restoration, clarity, personal growth, or simply a weekend dedicated to your own well-being, we would love to have you join us.

The retreat embodies many of the same principles we celebrate through yoga: slowing down, becoming present, cultivating awareness, and creating space for transformation.

We encourage you to save the date and join us for what promises to be a truly special weekend.

A Quick Studio Update:
As our Sanctuary continues to grow, we want to thank everyone for their patience as we work through the quirks of our beautiful historic building.

Occasionally, the downstairs entrance door may be locked. If you arrive and find the door closed, don't worry—we've installed a doorbell on the Sanctuary sign outside.

Simply ring the bell, and one of us will come let you in as quickly as possible.

Come Celebrate the Light
Whether you're joining us for International Yoga Day, our Summer Solstice Yin Practice, Community Yoga, a regular class or our upcoming Nourish, Flow & Heal Retreat, we are grateful to share this journey with you.

The solstice reminds us that life moves in cycles. There are seasons of growth, seasons of rest, and seasons of transformation. Yoga teaches us to honor them all.

As nurses, teachers, and lifelong students ourselves, we believe healing begins with awareness, grows through connection, and flourishes in community.

We look forward to practicing with you.
