Next week the U.S. Amateur returns to Merion for the 7th time, and the golf world and especially Philly golfers are buzzing with anticipation. If you are a golf fan, the U.S. Amateur is as good as it gets for the spectator experience. You’re watching the stars of tomorrow hit unbelievable shots on one of the most iconic golf courses in the world, and there’s no ropes. If you are a Philly golf fan, this is a chance to walk every square inch of storied Merion East - an incredibly inventive design that makes fullest possible use of the land with maybe the strongest 3 hole finish in the game. The 18th is the setting for the most famous image in golf - Hogan’s 1 iron to the green on his way to winning the 1950 U.S. Open.
I grew up in Havertown and opened my studio doors at 17th and Walnut in Center City back in the 90s. As an artist working in golf, I became completely enthralled with Merion. The ingenious design by Hugh Wilson and its amazing origin story, Hugh meeting with C.B. on the way to survey the great courses of the British Isles. Built and crafted by William Flynn. Site of Bob Jones’ U.S. Amateur debut in 1916, his victory in 1924 and his crowning achievement in 1930. Hogan winning the national championship in a playoff on bandaged legs. Trevino and the rubber snake on the first tee with Jack. Rosie pointing to the sky.
In 2005 I followed Edward Molinari and Dillon Doherty in the final round of the championship and watched Molinari sink everything he looked at, taking just 18 putts in 15 holes to convert a 3 down deficit to a 4 and 3 victory.
It’s a magical place.
So you can imagine how it feels for me to present my poster for the 2026 U.S. Amateur.
