There are several forms of magnesium on the market—citrate, glycinate, and oxide are the most common. There are claims that each offer their own benefit, from better sleep to heart health to increased energy, but the evidence is lacking that specific forms have specific benefits.

What’s most important is the amount of magnesium per serving and how well your stomach tolerates it. Magnesium glycinate is better tolerated if you have a sensitive stomach. 350 mg is the minimum standard for adults.

Magnesium and Stress

As stress increases, magnesium levels drop. As magnesium levels drop, stress is amplified.

Stress can be psychological, physical, emotional, and your body handles it better with adequate magnesium.

350-500mg is recommended for most adults, and about half fall below the minimum.

Magnesium vs. Migraine

There is strong evidence linking magnesium deficiency to more frequent and severe migraines. Magnesium citrate is the most commonly studied supplement, up to 600mg per day in migraine sufferers. For most adults, 350-500mg is recommended.

Magnesium plays a role in reducing the risk of migraines, heart failure, depression, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. In fact, adding more magnesium to your diet reduces your risk of death by 10%.

Deficiency is common—about 50% of adults fall below the daily minimum, and blood tests for magnesium are unreliable.

Shoot for 350-500mg per day. 1 ounce of pumpkin seeds is about 100mg.
