At Lake Monroe Sailing Association, community is everything and Bruce Ricklin truly embodies what it means to give back!
A retired teacher with a lifelong passion for working with kids, Bruce stepped up to help our youth sailing program when we needed it most. He’s been sailing for about 5-6 years now—a journey that started during the pandemic when he and his grandson, Teagan (a former LMSA camper and counselor!), bought a boat together. Teagan taught his grandpa how to sail, and they still head out on the lake together today!
Now, Bruce Ricklin uses his retired time to help us build momentum and introduce the joy of sailing to a new generation.

Summer is the peak breeding season for the barn swallows nesting across our property. If you look up in the main barn or inside the shelter houses, you will see nests currently filled with active chicks. Here are a few quick facts about our seasonal neighbors:
• Insect Control: A single adult barn swallow catches and eats up to 850 flying insects per day, drastically reducing the mosquito and fly population around our docks.
• Nest Construction: They build these cup-shaped nests using mud pellets mixed with grass and line them with feathers.
• Diet: Nestlings require constant feeding, meaning the parents are in non-stop flight during daylight hours to forage near the water.
• Legal Protection: Barn swallows are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, making it illegal to disturb or destroy an active nest containing eggs or young.

Thank you to the LMSA club members who help keep our youth sailing fleet floating and catching the wind. A special shoutout goes to Rich Morpurgo, who recently pitched in to patch one of our Sunfish. Another big cheer goes to Jim Lang, who keeps our sails stitched up. Everyone should take a moment to thank them both for their time, effort, and dedication to our young sailors. SUPPORT OUR YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM: Raffle Donors Needed! We are gearing up for our annual Fish Fry Fundraiser at the Lake Monroe Sailing Association on Saturday, August 15th, and we are looking for local businesses to partner with us as raffle donors.
Every dollar raised from this event directly funds our Youth Sailing Program. Our program provides children with a safe, fun environment to learn valuable life skills like responsibility, independence, and teamwork while discovering the joy of sailing.
To make this year’s fundraiser a success, we need the support of our business community. We are seeking donations of gift cards, products, services, or unique experiences for our raffle event. Partnering with us is a great way to showcase your business to our members and guests while investing in the youth of our community.
