I've heard this reasoning before, for carrying with one in the chamber.

It might not seem like it makes a difference, but a lot of people may not realize how fast you need to be to make a series of decisions and actions before "the fight" is too close for a firearm to be a good idea.
I recommend looking up the "Tueller drill" to understand how far away might be too close. It might be a lot farther than you think.

I'm an NRA certified instructor for the NRA's Basics of Pistol Shooting course. My experience with guns goes back to elementary school, having grown up with a family and environment where guns were a common recreational activity, sport, and means of getting food. I took a hunter’s safety course in Boy Scouts, but more recently, I realized my passion for training would fit well with my enjoyment of

AIRSOFT 🔫!
I usually talk a bit about them in my basics class because you can potentially get some valuable practice at home with an Airsoft version of your carry piece. If you don't know what airsoft is, they are "toys" that shoot plastic BBs instead of regular ammunition. they use CO2 cartridges. Here's an example:

I think it's worth considering using airsoft options in my classes instead of the lasers that I normally use. Former students, what do you think?
Pros:
1. Handling a realistic replica of a regular firearm with less inherent danger.
2. More accurate simulation of live fire compared to a regular firearm using a laser. The student must manually reset a semi-auto for every shot when using a laser and that is not realistic. Some students get used to this and try to reset the firearm after each shot of the live fire exercise at the range.
Cons:
1. Cost of procurement along with other measures to provide a safe experience, and purchase of consumables (CO2 cartridges).
What are your thoughts?

In honor of Independence Day, a relevant post on my firearm training page. Please read fully before deciding to comment.

The second amendment of the US Constitution is also known as part of the Bill of Rights. The full text reads:
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
--------
If memory serves me correctly, our forefathers won our independence from the British through use of force. Without armed citizens and organized militia, would there have been even a hint of hope for victory?
The second amendment is a failsafe of sorts. If all other options have been exhausted, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" may be our last hope of defeating a tyrannical and oppressive government. Yes it was motivated by taxation without representation, but that struck at the very fabric of society. As they saw it, their "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" (as stated in the Declaration of Independence) was limited.
If you've never driven before and to had to drive an ambulance to safe lives, could you do it successfully? If you've never piloted an aircraft before, could you fly one unaided, and live through the experience? Could you operate a computer if you've never done it before? If ever the people have to defend themselves (and fi****ms were the most effective option) what good would it do if they've never touched one before and have never built up any level of proficiency?
How much do you trust politicians? As you look at events across the globe in these "modern times," have we seen any leadership that have evolved into enlightened, altruistic beings?
I hope we all take some time to reflect on the significance of the holiday. Everyone, please be safe out there, always.
