In honor of National Apple Day, we thought to share a little science behind WHY apples are so good for us. While we’ve all heard that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, we haven’t always been able to connect the dots between this fruit and our health...
Did you know that apples contain pectin, a soluble, fermentable fiber that acts as a food source for certain beneficial gut bacteria?
* Research suggests apple consumption may encourage the growth of bacteria such as Bifidobacterium.
* When bacteria ferment pectin, they produce short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate that help maintain a healthy intestinal environment by reducing inflammation
* One medium apple with the skin provides about 4 grams of fiber - the goal is to aim for 30 grams per day for women and 40 for men
