Warm Up: Keep It Alive
Divide the class into small groups based on skill level and comfort with hitting the ball. Have athletes practicing the ball back and forth to another for 3 to 4 minutes. As the coach you’ll sit back and observe:
—>watch how the athletes interact? Are they moving around to help each other? Communicating or staying quiet? Are they encouraging their teammates? Are they trying to keep the ball in the air or just watching it? Are they working together or leaving it to one person?
The challenge is give each group 3 minutes to see how many consecutive hits they can get without the ball, touching the ground. Every time the ball hits the floor their count resets to zero.
*Encourage athletes to bring energy, communicate, compliment one another, move to help their teammates, and treat it as a joint effort. At the end of the three minutes, talk about what happened. Ask questions like would help the group group succeed? What made it harder? What made it more fun?
