Antero Reservoir Closure Will Sideline One of Colorado's Premier Stillwater Trout Fisheries - Fly Fisherman Denver Water will drain and close Antero Reservoir in 2026, shifting fishing pressure while protecting flows on the Dream Stream and Spinney during drought.

Here's an update from Denver Water on the closure of Antero Reservoir so many of you have asked us about. The likely outcome of this will be augmented flows for a good chunk of the summer as water is relocated to Cheesman Reservoir.
This is, really, the 'least bad' option available, and the best course of action to mitigate both evaporation and the impacts of drought on the South Platte River system.
We will keep you updated as we learn more.
Several of you have asked how this will impact Spinney Mountain Reservoir, which is already around 40% of its capacity. We don't fully know, but likely the water moving into Spinney will move through just as quickly. This could cool the reservoir a bit, but not likely to result in any fillage. Spinney is not a drought reservoir, and is owned by Aurora, not Denver, so I would not expect anyone to plan to vacate it. We will update you if we hear anything, but, my gut tells me to expect low water in Spinney but the outflow to match the inflow.

Now that the governor's office-appointed Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission has voted to direct CPW to enact new rules regarding the sale of fur products, it's really time for everyone to be aware that they need to make their voice heard.
Do not fool yourself: as murky as the outlook to do so is, the current administration wants to ban the sale of fur products, based entirely off of vibes and with a complete disregard for science and the Colorado economy. At present there is an exemption for hand-tied fishing flies (proof there's no sportsmen involved in the effort to make Colorado comply, because there's no such thing as a 'machine-tied fly'), as well as a few other things like felted hats 'crafted using heritage techniques,' whatever the heck that is defined as.
What it pointedly does NOT provide an exemption for is the materials used to tie flies. The intention is to ban their sale inside of the state - so, if they get their way, no, you will not be able to order supplies via the internet or go to multi-state big-box store to get your pine squirrel and bunny. And despite what some of the activists think, synthetic materials aren't going to fill all the gaps.
Elk and deer will be next on their list, and you'd be delusional to think that feathers - which will include hackle, to be certain (pretty much all this stuff is farmed, after all) - are on their to-be-banned list as well.
Check out this link to read up about this, and see down below in the comments for what you need to do about it. As haphazard and messy as this thing is at the moment, anglers need to recognize it for what it is: an attack on your sport. Make sure your voice is heard - check the comments!
Colorado Advances Petition to Ban Fur Sales On Wednesday, after a day of impassioned public comment and sometimes baffling deliberations, the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission voted 6-4 to advance a citizen’s petition to prohibit the lawful sale, barter, and trade of wildlife fur. This vote is a win for animal rights groups, but it’s f...

You may have heard of world events impacting the availability and price of tungsten, which includes tungsten beads. Sad to say, that's very true - costs are probably going to jump, possibly by quite a bit, and availability could be really spotty.
We are well-stocked at present however, with beads from Fulling Mill, MFC, and Umpqua - and holding prices for as long as possible! Stop in and load up!
We will be closed tomorrow, April 5th, in observation of Easter Sunday - come see Reb on Monday morning!
Happy Easter to all!
Sorry for any hassle, but the shop will be closed for about an hour -Sherry had a PT appointment and is going to wind up needing a ride home! Back in a bit!
