Shadow Politics at Play Again as Speaker Shekarchi Shifts Power

PROVIDENCE — A highly placed source inside the Rhode Island State House, speaking on condition of anonymity, says Speaker Joe Shekarchi is preparing to hand off House leadership to Majority Leader Chris Blazejewski as Shekarchi moves toward the open Rhode Island Supreme Court seat.

According to the source, the expected shift would have immediate political consequences, especially for gun owners and anyone tracking major legislation in the final stretch of the session. The source says Blazejewski would be positioned to move controversial gun bills quickly, while Shekarchi would gain distance from the political blowback.
