When people hear “sensory-friendly,” they usually think of a quiet room or a special event designed for a specific audience.
For imaginationislandfestival , we thought about the entire experience.
We kept the number of families small, gave everyone room to move, and created a flow that never felt rushed. We chose soft colors, natural materials, and lots of felt for children to touch and explore.
Even the giant rug in ( Ms. Stephanie )Ms. Stephanie’s spring area became part of the experience. Children rolled across it, stretched out on it, and gathered there together. It wasn’t just another piece of the installation. It helped shape how they experienced the space.
Sensory-friendly isn’t always about adding one accommodation. It can be thoughtfully designing every part of the experience from the very beginning.
