Each horse is carefully selected and patiently trained specifically for riders of all sizes and abilities. The first Sombrero stable was located at the current Estes Park site. In those days, trail rides went for $1.25 and the competition was stiff with over a dozen other riding stables in the area. Lots of enthusiasm, buckets of sweat, and much determination fueled the fire that led to Sombrero's growth and expansion over the years

Rex chose to settle into the Estes Park area along with his wife, Queeda (Pat's sister). Queeda played an active role in the development of the business from the beginning of its existence. Today, the Sombrero, Inc. operation offer visitors the opportunity to experience riding–as early settlers did–in the natural beauty of the Colorado Rockies. You won't find any souvenir shops or commercialism at Sombrero. The family has been very careful to preserve the land in order to share the dramatic beauty with their guests.

People often ask if our horses ever fight or if they all get along?

With any herd there’s always a pecking order and herd dynamics at play, but we can do a few things to ensure every horse stays safe!

1. Feeding plenty of hay —> this ensures there is plenty to go around!

2. Bunk space —> having lots of feed bunks and dispersing the hay allows the horses to spread out, reducing competition.

3. Rail Jail😂 —> if the first two fail, we resort to old school horsy time out. This means either time on the rail to be pet, or getting moved up in the order to hit the trails. A little exercise encourages them to prioritize eating and rest when they are in the pens.

In all, we are proud to say our horses get along pretty well and keep a tight knit group 😆 (…even on their 5,000 acre winter pasture where they could separate if they wished). It’s fun to see them form friendships with each other, and we do our best to ensure a cohesive, happy herd! 🐴

It’s that time of year again! Cooler weather and shorter days mean the bull elk are losing their velvet and traveling further to find females.

We’ve been seeing a lot of elk activity around the stables particularly, which is neat to observe from a distance! Come visit Estes Park this fall to see the amazing rut season for yourself… (and come by the stables to ride while your at it😉)
