Earlier this year the American College of Sports Medicine rewrote its resistance training guidelines. First update in 17 years. They went through 137 studies, over 30,000 people, and landed on something almost annoyingly simple: you don't need a perfect program, you need one you'll actually show up for.
No requirement to train to failure. No requirement for fancy equipment. Hit your major muscle groups twice a week and stay consistent, and you get almost all of the benefit there is to get.
That's been the whole idea behind how GFM trains people past 50 for a long time now — a couple of focused sessions a week, real food with protein on the plate, nothing so complicated you talk yourself out of it on a Tuesday. Past 50, consistency does more for you than intensity ever will, mostly because your recovery isn't playing by the same rules it did at 30.
If you want to feel what that looks like before committing to anything, run a 2-Day Strength Reset with us. No strings attached: bit.ly/4qNTDRt

September always does this. Kids go back to school, the daylight starts disappearing earlier, and everyone's calendar somehow gets fuller even though nothing on paper changed. The first thing to go for most people over 50 is the workout. Then dinner turns into whatever's fastest instead of what's actually good for you.
Give that six months and you're not just out of shape, you're managing energy crashes, sleeping worse, and telling yourself you'll get back to it in January. You won't, not without changing something structural, because January has its own version of "no time."
Here's the part most people get wrong: the fix isn't finding more hours. It's using less of them, on purpose. One properly loaded working set per movement, done to real failure, once a week, is enough stimulus for the body to adapt — that's roughly 60 minutes total training time in a week, not 60 minutes a day. Same logic on food. Protein first on every plate, three to five colors, portions sized to your hand. No app, no counting, no extra decision-making at 8pm when you're exhausted.
That's the whole system. It's built for people with real jobs and real schedules, not people with unlimited time to spend at a gym.
If the fall crunch already has your routine slipping, the 2-Day Strength Reset is a good place to reset it without a big time commitment: bit.ly/4qNTDRt

A client of mine turned 70 this year. When she started, she told me straight up what worried her: her balance, her overall strength, and whether she could get herself up off the ground without help if she ever went down.
That's not a small worry once you're past 50. That's the whole ballgame.
Here's what she left as a review a few months into training, word for word — this is a real Google review, not a script: "I can't say enough good things about Get Fit and its owner, Dietrich. As a 70-year-old, I became increasingly concerned about my balance, overall strength, and ability to get up on my own without assistance. Those concerns led me to Get Fit, and I'm extremely glad they did. Dietrich has an outstanding training style: knowledgeable, encouraging, and always attentive to safety. He meets you exactly where you are, while still challenging you to improve and make steady progress. I never feel rushed or pushed beyond what's appropriate, yet I'm consistently encouraged to grow stronger and more confident. His focus on proper form and injury prevention gives me great peace of mind. Week by week, I genuinely feel stronger, more stable, and safer in my everyday movements. The progress I've made has been both noticeable and empowering."
— Alice D., Google review
That's the actual goal of training right past 50. Not a bigger number on the bar. Being the person who gets up off the floor without a second thought, at 70, 80, and beyond. One properly loaded working set, done consistently, builds real strength. Paying attention to balance and how you move day to day is what makes that strength hold up in real life.

Every couple weeks another headline tells people over 50 to eat less protein if they want to live longer. This time it's a big review out of Wisconsin, 350 studies, mostly done on mice, and somehow that turned into diet advice for humans.
Follow it for five years and here's roughly where it lands you: less muscle, slower to get up off the floor, weaker grip, more likely to fall and actually break something when you do. Researchers who work with aging adults for a living are already calling this one out — one called it a beautiful mouse story sold as human advice. Past 65, low protein is tied to more frailty and more falls, not less. Your body needs MORE protein as you age to build the same amount of muscle, because the machinery for using it just isn't as efficient anymore.
Protein first, every plate, no exceptions — that's not a trend for me, it's been the baseline for years, paired with real strength work under load. That combination is what keeps you moving and independent at 70 instead of managing a slow decline.
Curious what training that way actually feels like? Run the 2-Day Strength Reset with us, no strings attached: bit.ly/4qNTDRt

Everyone's tracking the number on the scale.
Nobody's tracking what came off with it.
New reporting this year on GLP-1s (Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound) confirms what I've been telling clients for two years: without resistance training, a real chunk of what you lose on these drugs is muscle — not fat.
Keep doing that past 50 with no strength work in the plan, and in five years you're not "leaner." You're smaller, weaker, and a lot closer to needing help off the floor.
The shot isn't the plan. It's half of one. Time Under Load training exists to protect the muscle these drugs put at risk — one hard, honest set per movement, nothing fancy.
If you're on a GLP-1 (or considering one) and want to keep the muscle while the number drops, the 2-Day Strength Reset will show you exactly how: https://bit.ly/4qNTDRt

Here's something I see constantly —

Someone comes in working out 4-5 days
a week for years.

Strong effort. Real commitment.

But the results stopped coming
a long time ago.

It's not age.
It's not effort.

It's one movement pattern that's been
quietly working against them
the entire time.

One adjustment changes everything.

I've been finding it for people
for 25 years.

This week I'm doing it for free.
20 minutes on Zoom.

DM me AUDIT and I'll send you
a booking link.

Feeling stuck despite working hard? It might be overstimulation and lack of recovery. If you push too hard without letting your body heal, your results stall. This isn't about hitting it harder; it's about smart stimulus and adequate recovery.
